Motherwell - Post Office will have to think again

Post Office Ltd has abandoned plans to close the Civic Square post office in Motherwell due to the amount of public opposition to the move.

Back in April the Post Office launched a six-week consultation to get feedback on its proposal which would have seen the post office relocated to new premises within a Leven Street shop.

The owners of the nearby Civic Cafe immediately launched a petition against the move which collected hundreds of signatures.

This combined with the overall level of public outcry, plus criticism from Citizen’s Advice Bureau means that the Post Office has decided to think again.

A spokeswoman for Post Office Ltd said: “In making our decision not to relocate Civic Square post office, we have taken into account all relevant factors including the responses we received as part of the consultation process and the concerns raised by the independent statutory consumer watchdog, and the branch will therefore continue to operate from its existing location for the time being.

“During the consultation we received a number of individual responses from customers and local representatives and a petition opposing the proposal.

“The independent statutory consumer watchdog, Citizen’s Advice, also expressed concerns about the proposed move.

“Comments focussed on the distance to and location of the proposed new premises, which respondents said would move the Post Office too far away from the main business area, across a main arterial road, and that the move would adversely affect customers and local businesses who use the current branch.

“We also received a small number of comments supporting the proposed move.”
