A viable letter bomb has been discovered at a postal sorting office in Newtownabbey.

Police attended the centre on the Mallusk Road on Friday night.

Officers from the army bomb squad later confirmed the item to be a "viable, letter bomb type device".

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "There are no further details at present".

The alert ended at 1.45am on Saturday.

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Theresa Villiers has condemned the incident.

She tweeted: "Once again these reckless and cowardly individuals have demonstrated complete disregard for postal workers and local community. I condemn this action.

"Anyone with any information should pass it to @PoliceServiceNI @ChiefConPSNI."

A letter bomb was found overnight at the Royal Mail sorting office in Mallusk.

Part of the depot had to be evacuated last night as Army bomb disposal officers dealt with the device contained in a suspicious package.

The security alert ended in the early hours.

The attack was described as “reckless” by Northern Ireland Secretary of State Theresa Villiers, who added: “Once again these reckless and cowardly individuals have demonstrated complete disregard for postal workers and local community.”

The object has been taken away for further examination.

Sadly, I do not think any of our offices were up to dealing with alleged bombs--our bomb tube was way to the side of the bulding in a mucky field! And Christmas time was bad. Sometimes out on delivery items with batteries would sometimes go off !

Exactly how good are these "bomb tubes" anyway and would they actually be capable of containing the explosion if the suspect item went off?
Also if you are not meant to touch or move the suspect item after you've had the misfortune of actually finding one of these then who actually moves it to the "bomb tube"?

and how to employees suppose to identity potential bomb parcel. It is not good. I hope they have a scanner to scan the parcels in Northern Ireland and all major mail centre.

You usually know by a few red flags, overpostage, a smell but normally it's who it's going to.......although the packet machine wouldn't have the same ability
