A former postmistress who admitted lying to the police that she’d been robbed at gunpoint has been jailed for 12 months.

Margaret Player, of Main Street, Croxton Kerrial, pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court to perverting the course of justice, theft and fraud.

Player (47) concocted a story that an armed robber had confronted her at the post office in Main Street, Croxton Kerrial, in December 2011.

As a result of her report to the police, armed officers were deployed to the scene.

Player was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Monday after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a robbery.

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: “Officers attended the incident and carried out extensive enquiries to try and identify those responsible.

“During the investigation discrepancies were identified in the report and financial accounts at the post office. Player was interviewed by officers in January 2012 and subsequently charged with falsely making a report of robbery, fraud and theft.”

Detective Constable Rob Buckley, who investigated the incident, added: “When Margaret Player reported the robbery she told the call handler a firearm had been used to threaten her and steal money.

“The initial response and subsequent enquiries resulted in many police hours being spent on the investigation. The enquiries spanned over two years and following those enquiries it was in January 2012 that we were able to arrest and interview Margaret Player.

“We’re pleased she pleaded guilty to the offences put before her in court. This was a complex investigation and we hope this conviction will deter others who may be considering abusing their position of trust.

“We would also like to thank the local community for their assistance and patience during the investigation.”
