Homemovers open to ID theft threat, says Royal Mail

Many people moving home are putting themselves at risk of ID fraud by failing to tell their financial service providers their new address.

A Royal Mail survey found a third of people moving forgot to give their new details to at least one provider.

Half of those asked said they had received letters through the door thought to contain sensitive financial information for previous residents.

The majority said that they were concerned about identity theft.

The crime is used by fraudsters who gather personal information in order to raid accounts or raise credit in somebody else's name.

Royal Mail said movers were most likely to fail to tell pension providers about the change of address.

Stephen Proffitt, of Action Fraud, the reporting centre for fraud and internet crime, said: "If someone fails to tell their financial services provider, whether it is a bank or pension company, they have moved home, they are increasing the risk that personal information could fall into the wrong hands and be used fraudulently.

"Action Fraud received more than 130,000 reports of identity enabled fraud last year, valued at £410m."
