Postman suspended for allegedly defecating in street in Ely

A postman has been temporarily suspended for allegedly defecating in a residential street in Ely.

According to residents, the postman, who was wearing his uniform at the time, was seen defecating in an area of shrubbery in Henley Way – a quiet housing development located off Prickwillow Road.

Royal Mail has confirmed that a postman, based in Ely, has been suspended “while an investigation into the matter is carried out”.

It is not known who reported the alleged incident but residents who live in and around Henley Way say they are “horrified”.

Mum-of-two Harriet King, of Henley Way, said: “My friend had heard about this and told me but I didn’t know whether to believe it or not.

“You certainly don’t expect someone to go to the toilet like that in the street.

“If the incident has been reported to Royal Mail then obviously someone must have witnessed it happening, which must have been awful for them.”
Another Henley Way resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I’d heard about this through the grapevine.

“I thought it was a joke but obviously if Royal Mail has confirmed that an investigation is under way then it isn’t.

“It just beggars belief.

“It horrifies me to think that any human being thinks it is acceptable to defecate in a built up, residential area like Henley Way.

“I’m sure there are a lot of people who, in an emergency situation, have had to go to the toilet maybe in a ditch or somewhere out the way, but to do it near to people’s homes is absurd.”

Royal Mail was unable to go into detail about the alleged incident.

However, a spokeswoman for the organisation, said: “Royal Mail can confirm that a postman has been precautionarily suspended whilst we carry out an investigation into this matter.”

What if there are no ditches? All public toilets closed. I knocked a door once in desperation for a toilet, the lady said, sorry my husband isn't here. I didn't want him to hold it for me. Its a nightmare out there, thankfully never happened to me but its a normal bodily function, if you gotts go... Thankfully in my years you get to know people and they always say if you ever need to the loo just knock.

Must've been awful for everybody. I'm lucky personally, without excessive detail, that my 'clearout' time is just after I wake up and then later on before tea time. Therefore I have never had cause to log-out during a walk/working hours. I do know a couple of posties with IBS and they both have their own round so like the poster above they have a repertoire of addresses they can use along their route. If you are a reserve or have no existing dumping facilities on your walk it must be terrible to need a clearout especially if you're 'touching cloth' and there is a 20-minute drive back to the DO. I know people will make jokes about this but everyone needs to remember the last time they were in agony waiting to go.....
