IS that an exaggeration? What is an accurate time frame for a reserve to end up with his own - decent - walk?

It took me a year - the guy after me 7.

There is no accurate time frame it all depends on people leaving, walks changing and budget. Its similar to trying to count how many angels on the head of a pin - you can't count them because the variables keep changing.

Having only been with Royal Mail for 7mths , i know nothing of the good old days , but we reserves are over a barrel...
We have to do the overtime to make up our hours , on short term contracts so have little hope until 2yrs.

Don't get me wrong i love the job, i have great people i work with , love the out door work, but every 3mths i wonder if i'll get a new contract. My line manager is always on my case to do more and more overtime (which i have to do to make up my hrs).

The way Royal Mail are going too many people will be part time , the customers won't know there postie , which i feel is a very bad thing..

Its all money money money....

Why is the union not doing something about this reserves have the same rights as everyone else...Union get your finger out and get this sorted or is it to much like hard work...Surely this a form of discrimination and would not stand up in a court of law.

To be fair to the Union they have, all the agreements we have and the law say that everyone should be treated equally. Beyond that there is nothing they can do at HQ until and unless local members start making noises, taking a stand or perhaps even striking. Then the focus is put on local management/reps and things can change.

Managers will always try to make their job as easy as possible, its human nature (and we are the same), and if they keep getting away with it they will keep doing it. If you don't like it then you have to make a noise, start bugging the rep, the ADR, the Branch, management, with grievances, emails, letters texts as appropriate. As someone once said its the squeaky wheel gets the most attention.

If you want things to change you can't rely on someone else doing it for you, you have to take some action yourself. This is what the trite saying "You are the Union" really means.

Now as making noises go that's pretty loud, if they feel you have a case. :nana :nana :nana

True Blue Terrier or any Union Rep on here an honest answer to an honest question do you think I have a case..My office consists of roughly 120 posties..Out that 120 posties 115 get 1 in 6 Saturdays off and a set rotation for their day off on the other hand 5 of us get no 1 in 6 Saturdays off and no set rotation for a day off ..With this in mind I can plan nothing like time off with my partner never mind weekends away or such like..Plus I can't ask for a swap for my day off with a fellow posties as I don't know what my day off will be in any given week. It is so wrong on so many counts.

Honest answer I don't know if you have a case. It probably all depends on the context.

Are all 5 who don't get them reserves. Are there any other reserves that are getting (if they are then it probably is unfair)

There is also the problem of the wording of the BT2010 agreement when it says the Majority will get 1 in 6 Saturdays. Strictly speaking your office would seem to be upholding that part of the agreement, however it still can be unfair if some reserves are getting them and some aren't.

But, and this is where context and local conditions have an effect, are all reserves on the same attendance pattern (working 5 out of 6) or is there a mixture (9 day, 3 week, 1in 4s, 5 out of 6 etc) if so then proving unfairness would be more difficult but not impossible.

It really needs someone without a vested interest to look at it dispassionately and without being influenced from outside. I wonder if the Union could set it up so someone from another Area or Branch could look at it independently :hmmmm

Thanks for the reply all 5 reserves are like me working 5 out of 6 with no long weekend and no set rotation..Like I say can't plan anything or swap days off so for me it's unfair and discriminatory. Got in touch with CWU and will speak to a solicitor on Friday regarding this matter..

Even getting your own duty is no guarantee that you’ll actually get to deliver it.

I supposedly got my own walk in 2006. In the first year I got to do it 35 times.
In the second year I only got to do it 10 times and in the third year I only managed to do it 6 times.

The excuse was always the same, I was needed to do some other duty.
I knew about 25 or so different duties, so there was always something that I knew that needed covering.

Subsequently, I put myself forward for one of the least known and least liked duties in the office.
I got it and, surprise, surprise, I haven’t been moved off it since.

So, if there’s a moral to this story, it’s go for the crappiest duty the office has to offer, that way you’ll get it and stay on it. :chuckle
