COURIER PAGE 19

Post by holly123 »

Just been reading the courier and spotted an article at the bottom about not leaving parcels in porches , when I was tested by union and managers they told us to use porches , were do we stand on this now if the reply in the courier was not to use them , my duty would need redoing if they want me to use neighbours as in the article on page 6 , DELIVERY TO A NEIGHBOUR IS NOW A ROYAL MAIL STANDARD ! :d'oh!

Your first duty is to secure the mail.
If you can open the porch to put the packet in, then someone else can open it to take the packet away.
That isn't secure.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Same can be true of somebody's front door and you'll quite happily post mail through that.

if thats the case then we should all start checking each front door to make sure its locked before we put the mail through.

So if I have a D2d for an address and the door with the letterbox is slightly ajar, I knock said door and ring said door bell, and no answer, I cannot place D2ds inside ajar door and then under new rule must now try and deliver D2d to a neighbour. I manage to deliver the D2ds and then go back to original door which is still ajar, I knock again, no answer but unable to leave a P739 card as I cannot guarantee that the owner would receive it as it would be regarded as door stepping the P739. For fck sake :no no

Once the mail has crossed the threshold the security is the responsibility of the householder.

That is not what you said Clash. You said ' If you can open the porch'
What is the difference between a door that can be opened on a porch, and a door that can be opened on the house?

I know I'll probably be berated on this site for saying so, but my policy is pretty straightforward on this. If the homeowner has left anything of remote value in their porch, such as shoes, plants, coats, etc. then they presumably think of it as being a safe enough place to have a parcel left. If the porch is empty of anything nickable then I don't leave anything in it. This hasn't got me into trouble so far and seems sensible to me.

My own porch at home is full of the family shoes/boots, is always unlocked, and I'm happy for the postie to leave parcels in it. I do live in nice neighbourhood tho! :dance

We all take risks based on the environment that we work in.

Thankfully, I work in an area with a low crime rate and can take risks that I wouldn’t consider in other areas.

Porches, outhouses, garages, garden sheds, greenhouses, childrens’ play houses, stables – I use ‘em all.
None are secure and all represent an element of risk. One day it might well backfire on me.

However, RM appear to want have their cake and eat it. On the one hand the security of the mail is paramount
and on the other we are being exhorted to “deliver first time”.
There is a conflict in these messages that is going to lead to tears at some point, I just hope that they’re not mine. :chuckle

Well, a colleague of mine left a large (huge) box in a porch once. The porch was a full one, where he opened the door. The customer (lying b*stards if you ask me, a dodgy claim scam) alleged the box was stolen. This was a decent area, and I actually delivered their letters that day and saw it in there. Now usual practice for this house is that the letterbox is on the outside of the porch, a full closed porch, and that is where the mail was 'safely' delivered. The DIM to be fair said the same, that he'd left the box in exactly the same place as the mail would drop when delivered properly, i.e. behind the FIRST established delivery portal viv-a-viz their outer letterbox in a closed door.

I actually asked my colleague for a description of the box as I'd only seen the top of it, with a view to having a discreet check of their recycling waste on the appropriate day in case they'd slipped up and thrown it out. Didn't see it, but sly b*stards would sell the 'free' item on or chop the cardboard up small anyway.

Now I don't buy that a stranger walked into their porch in a quiet decent road, open plan area, in full view of everybody and staggered away with a bloody great box in their arms to their vehicle or whatever. Since then we take EVERYTHING back where it's necessary to knock their door and get no answer.

yes, they want next to nothing brought back to office but there are so many ways to get in trouble!
i would bet 80% of us posties leave packets/mail in unlocked porches! & we were told a few years back by a lino in a wtl that leaving packets in porches is ok to do!
I believe wtl will be interesting this week with this revelation of no packets in unlocked porches!

Lots of our guys still doorstep in plain view of the street just to finish as early as possible. I've often wondered how a reserve partner can get their loops and packets done so quickly only to deliver mail later and see the packet on the doorstep!

I bet they praised for not bringing back much as well!
