The eye watering price tag which includes the buyer's premium, makes the 2.5 cm by 3.2 cm stamp printed in black on magenta paper the most expensive stamp ever sold at auction and the most valuable object by weight and size, according to the auction house.

How the New York Times looked at it:

A tiny square of very old red paper with cut corners — a one-cent postage stamp from the 19th century — sold for $9.5 million on Tuesday, the most ever paid for a stamp at auction, but $500,000 short of the auction house’s $10 million to $20 million presale estimate.
