First class couple! Husband and wife found love at Royal Mail sorting office 25 years ago

Tracy and Paul McCarty are happily married with three children a quarter of a century after starting work together in Salford

Husband and wife posties Tracy and Paul McCarty found love at the sorting office – and 25 years later they are happily married with three children.

Tracy and Paul got together in the 90s after sorting letters side by side at the Royal Mail depot on Cross Lane, Pendleton, Salford.

Tracy, 42, who joined Royal Mail sorting office as a postwoman in 1990, said: “We used to chat to each other all the time at work, just friendly banter, but then the manager split us up because we were talking too much.”

Paul, 47, a Royal Mail driver, added: “We rigged up a makeshift walkie-talkie with a couple of plastic cups and a bit of string – they didn’t have mobile phones in those days.”

The couple, of Liverpool Street in Weaste, have seen many changes at Royal Mail over the years and are delivering more parcels than letters nowadays – but they both still love the job.

The McCartys have had a few deliveries of their own as well - as proud parents to children, Daniel, 21, Amy, 17, and Abbie, 11.

Tracy said: “It’s great to be outdoors and when we had the children we could work different shifts so one of us would be home with them all the time.

“Now they are older we can have a bit of time for ourselves too by working the same shifts again.”

Tracy’s round covers the M6 postcode with Hope Hospital and surrounding residential estates.

And she is so familiar to customers some of them know her by name and give her gifts.

She added: “One pensioner always has a handful of grapes for me and another regular gives me a bag of toffees.”

Paul delivers mainly to business premises in the Trafford Park and the Regent Road area of Salford.

And they both lived happy ever after until Agenda for Growth came.
