No its any CWU member's job to explain the Union's roll within the office and point out any benefits to new starters. If they want to join then introduce them to the rep for a form etc.

The rep cant do it all. :hmmmm
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

An introduction to the union (by the union) should form part of the induction for a newstart and an introduction to the unit rep should occur on the first day.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I met a union member on my induction day at Bristol. He came in to tell all the new employees about the union and it's role. I felt sorry for the union guy because just before he came into the room. The guy conducting the induction day spent five minutes slagging the union off and gave a list of reasons why we should not join. Most new employees had made their decision about the union before he had entered the room.

Here's my Tuesday rant recently moved do and am a reserve started New walk monday and was 45 mins over tried to claim it today and was told swings and roundabouts and it wasn't submitted. So I asked for number so I can cut off if I need to as I arnt working over if not being paid she didn't give it to me so next week when on another new walk will book an hour before going out and if not allowed to will insist on a phone number so I can cut off. Another problem is I have to use bus to get to thewalk which can take up to 30 mins they only allow 15 deep joy

Recruitment is the responsibility of the Branch and that has been made clear more than once by HQ who have pointed out that offices should be visited but it obviously falls on deaf ears. I sometimes wonder if it doesn't amount to negligence when there hasn't been a recruitment drive for years which is about the same amount of time there was last a visit. Perhaps it's a deliberate ploy to have fewer members who would have a voice and instead just leave them to be shaped by Royal Mail into runners, overtime kings, non meal takers, work overtime without pay, come in early and be a general dogs body without representation and consequently ignored by the CWU.

I did have this at my induction down at Bristol, there was about 15 of us and only 4 or 5 took the form. The CWU rep was a bit embarrassed when somebody said "I want to be in the union but not donate to Labour." he said that would be OK, then realized he didn't have the new forms that allowed opt-out of the political levy. Poor guy. He seemed a bit shocked to find that some areas of England weren't predominantly populated by Labour voters.....
I did tell him I would join but not pay money to Labour, and I kept my word when I started at my DO and filled the newer form in with an added opt-out.
It turned out after my accident that it was the best thing I ever did, and while I am at RM I will always be proud to be a member.
Whatever your political beliefs, in this job we need unity and (unlike sedentary or low-risk jobs) with the added potential for physical injuries/accidents, stress and and B&H at some sites you'd be unwise not to join.

Why are you travelling on public transport, have you had a revision, how do you get back from your walk, what happens if the bus breaks down?

Because there is time built into the duties for prepping d2ds Monday to Saturday.
But not to do the WHOLE WEEKS D2D's on Monday and tuesday

Runner doesn't necessarily mean literally running, but somebody who walks/jogs at an unnatural speed in order to make time and go early, usually not using trolley and cutting corners. They hate being paired with non-runners.
I've had drivers like this, usually ones much younger than I am

A 'runner' is someone who starts an hour early and rushes his/her job (and those around them) in an attempt to finish 5 minutes early.
I used to come in early, but I've learnt the earlier you start the more collapsing they give you - so now I start to time. Of course now I lag behind other people and they want to know why I'm slower getting ready. It doesn't help in that I have different drivers every day and some of them don't start their duty till 9.00

I think everyone would benefit if we all start one hour earlier and finished earlier as 7am starting time is not good enough.

I mean we can't pop in chippie for lunch or get home before school run start some days.

What I dont understand is I am starting on time and still tieing up at the same time as the earlies. Most of the time they are just drinking coffee waiting for the next lorry, oh and doing redirections inbetween lorries, they end up going through a pile of redirections 3 times
