A firm supplying bacon by post has been forced to add a 'natural deterrent' to its packaging to stop excited dogs ripping apart the parcels on the doormat

A firm supplying bacon through the post has been forced to come up with special packaging for dog owners to stop their pets eating the meat when it drops through the letterbox.

Cure and Simple, which will deliver 10 rashers by first class post, was set up last month to send out 'artisan bacon' to the masses.

Rather than delivering it themselves, the firm - based in the village of Great Hormead in Herts - uses Royal Mail to bring home the bacon.

But they have special packaging for dog owners which includes a 'natural deterrent.'

Boss Charlie Pyper, 36, said it was 'perfectly fine' to send the bacon - from Large White and Duroc pigs - through the post.

"All of our bacon is vacuum packed and placed into an insulated envelope with a cooling gel," he said,

"Getting the bacon through your door is what we do, however sometimes that is not enough.

"What if a dog happens to be on the other side of the door, when the post gets delivered?

"Simply let us know when you sign up and we will use a natural deterrent on the packaging."

But he admitted that the dog deterrent doesn't always work, adding: "In our testing, we found some dogs would chew the packaging regardless of what deterrents we used.

"The bacon is vacuum packed, and then packed in an envelope and then an outer envelope (and so) keeps smells to the minimum.

"With the deterrent then added we believe all reasonable steps have been taken to prevent the bacon being eaten.

"We would love it to be fool proof but unfortunately we cant guarantee that your dog will not chew your post."

He added: "All deliveries are made using Royal Mail, 1st Class Post.

"Our Bacon envelopes go through a standard letterbox. So if you can receive normal letters through the post you can receive Cure and Simple bacon."

The firm is currently producing three types of bacon - Old English, bourbon-flavoured and pancetta.
