A motorcyclist has died after a smash with a Royal Mail van.
Police today confirmed the man died in the Royal Victoria Infirmary yesterday after the accident which happened at 6.50am on Thursday.
Passing drivers desperately tried to help the motorbike rider, who was in his 50s, as he lay injured in the road after the early morning horror smash.
He was taken to hospital were he tried to fought for life but sadly passed away.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “ The motorcyclist died yesterday, Friday, June 13, at the RVI hospital. We are not in a position to name him at this stage.
“Police are continuing to appeal for information to the crash which happened Thursday, June 12, at 6.50am, on the A187 Times View Terrace, East Howdon, near to the entrance of the pedestrian tunnel, when the motorbike rider collided with a Royal Mail van. The van driver, a man in his 50s, suffered minor injuries. Enquiries are still being carried out to establish the circumstances of the collision.”
A scrapman who was first on the scene, told how he used his van to block the road, while another stranger gave the stricken biker first aid. The 24-year-old, who did not want to be named, said: ”It was the most horrific thing I have seen in my life.” The scrapman who is from North Shields, told how he saw the man every morning riding his orange motorbike near the Tyne Tunnel’s north entrance, in Wallsend. So he was horrified when he suddenly turned to see the familiar fellow motorist had been involved in a collision.
