Lads I keep hearing people moan about the sun newspapers I know it's a pain but lets squash TNT together and get the big contracts over to royal mail to prove we can do the job. If we fail TNT will be loving it. It's job security at the end of the day and if it means gas being made up because we get busier it's all good. Just think of it as another door to door work to your time and cutt off let some1 else book the docket lets not be the laughing stock of the media and let other big contracts slip by because TNT will get them

I am sorry and please feel free to correct me if iam totally wrong here but this seems to be written by someone who has either no first hand knowledge of an actual walking delivery or perhaps a very naive view and new to the job.

Let me spell it out. Thursday your going to walk in to your normal bulging mech trays / heavy load of flats and 2+ drop bags full of packets, rec, tracked and special delivery. No allowance is going to be made. Your already going to be tired as you have spent Monday - Weds delivering 5 lots of d2d’s which should have been spread over 6 days. At your frame is going to be a stack of 30-40 kgs of 600 unfolded newspapers. I fail to see raise in spirits here.

So on top of the normal Thursday's days quota which will no doubt stretch you to around 4hr 30 mins of walking in god know what weather and pushing a 100 kg trolley your going to be faced with at least another 18 kg of awkward heavy newspapers. What if it chucks it down like on sat, there going to turn to mush.

To complete this special d2d will involve much smaller loops and trolley refreshes which wont happen on time as RM have not put any extra resources in place. The result will be a 5hr 30 min + exhausting delivery span with a finish time of nearing 4pm. Oh and at the end of it you can book 1hr 15 mins of "golden SA overtime" ( about £11 after tax etc) to compensate for your aching back and swollen feet. You can then go home but not before you have scrubbed the black newsprint from your grimy hands.

Moan moan moan. What's all the drama about? Judging by some of the reactions in this topic, you'd think some actual bad news had been announced, like err... job losses or wage cuts. Instead, we've got some more work that's profitable for the business. I love a nice quiet tuesday as much as anyone, don't we all. But we all know it's the packets and godforsaken D2D that actually keep us in a job in the first place. We're being paid 8 hours or whatever your hours are to prep and deliver items to addresses. Personally couldn't care less what the items are, just turn up for work at my start time and finish when my hours end. If I have to cut off with items left over and the managers don't like it then so what, sod all they can do about it. Why stress out over it. Just work to your hours if you don't want the extended/overtime. No need for the song and dance. What i'm most concerned about is whether the money from contracts such as this will be re-invested properly to help grow the business and secure jobs, rather than simply go to executive bonuses or spent on bollocks like WCM. This is what should be the union's priority right now. Not having to put up with those of you moaning because oh, god forbid, you have to do the loops a bit differently for a few days. Oh dear heavens, what could possibly be worse!

Well said, what a bunch of drama queens. What do you expect RM to do, turn down the contract? Unfortunately we are now a privatised company and as such will take all and anything to make a profit, such is life. Yes it would be better for it to be delivered from monday, but as they say the customer is king. And would there be so much angst if it was some left wing rag instead of the Sun? I think not.

A bit of common sense said on the matter.
WHY O WHY can't we just go to work & potter about for 6 hours then go home 2 hours early after doing very little.
I pay my union subs & i deserve that as a right otherwise whats the point of being in union

Ok fair comments about moaning as I can see that it does come across that way. However its the people on here that know RM from old that have genuine concerns.

Let me explain.

Some of you seem to think that this is will be a special “one off” and lets get it out the way and move on. Believe me once RM see a crack they will exploit the opening and your staring at the future as these timed d2d drops are highly profitable for our shareholders. So what’s wrong with that ? Well nothing if it is managed correctly and falls under the current established d2d guidelines.

The 6 day spread of d2d is there for a reason. It prevents people from overloading their deliveries and struggling around with excessive weight which always leads to strains and injury. Its basic health & safety for all staff.

Before the 20% a day d2d rule people would load the whole frame with a weeks worth and then struggle around with massive heavy bags using their own cars just to clear it for the rest of the week. We had guys who would take the d2d home at the weekends and get all the family sitting around folding and collating leaflets on a Sunday, I kid you not.

Now taking on a short notice high profile d2d drop every now and then is fine if its a leaflet or perhaps a light booklet as this would fit into the frame and could be delivered with the normal mail. We should also expect some form of extra payment for this work as it is a bonus contract. However to deliver something as heavy and bulky as a newspaper over our 2 busiest days should have taken careful researching and logistical planning with the introduction of pre prepared extra resource applied in delivery offices in the form of extra support staff.

None of this has happened. It appears the Union has been and caught napping (going by their letter to staff). H&S has been thrown out the window. Yes of course you can simply work your paid hours you and cut off and personally I will but its easier for me as I am on a full term contract, have union connections and have been in this job forever. For some it will be much harder as they are worried about their 3 month contracts being renewed and will not want to appear a problem to the dom. As a result they will feel pressurised into working a later day than they are comfortable with and most likely end up carrying overweight pouches to clear the work.

Finally we have an ageing workforce which we need to protect and likewise this sudden increase in workload will put senior guys under increased pressure who may already be at their physical limits.

So, if you have a 90% call rate on Thursday your Dom expects you to just deliver 90% of this shite on that day and not go over? Tell him you'll take anything out he wants but it's coming back at your finish time, or work 15-20 minutes over if you want to show a bit of willing. Personally I won't be, I don't mind a hard days work but the stuff being thrown at us now on certain days is ridiculous.

Does your workload exceed the amount of time you have?
If so and no OT is required cut off

Does your workload mean you have contracted time spare at end of shift?
Then lapse.
