Compulsory 'Delivery to Neighbour'?

Heard today from a couple of sources that this is going to be the way forward... not sure if it's the area director flexing his muscles in an attempt to get more parcels delivered first time so he can get a pat on the head from Moya...

Our DOM's next step will be to require detail on Tracked items' P739s of which neighbours we tried before leaving the card.

What is the classification of a neighbour. Someone directly living next door to you, or could it be someone living across the street, or even someone living more than one door away. The mind boggles as I take up my duty time to deliver one parcel, the other side of town, having knocked on all the doors in between.

We had a WTLL about this about 3 weeks ago. RM is comparing our stats about returned tracked items to the other courier companies. The manager was particular about us trying neighbours for tracked items because we are at close to 90 percent whereas the others (cowboys) are slightly above.

It is a joke! Close to 90% returns is actually very good given the number of tracked items we have to deliver as well as letters; as postmen and postwomen.

RM needs to stop comparing us to other Couriers that simply deliver packets and most of them are only paid for actually delivering the damn things; so they put/chuck them anywhere, and are prepared try a few neighbours in order to get paid.

The gist was that customers are complaining about having to go to the delivery depot to collect their items. there was me thinking that the biggest advantage of using Royal Mail is that you can get a few redeliveries, can pick up at the local Post Office or go to the local* delivery office.

* Yes, some local delivery offices might be a bit of a journey but it is nothing compared to the likes of UPS, DHL, Yodel and so on. Some do not even have collections points in the same county as where they deliver to to.

** Yes, there are other collection points being touted by the Couriers such as supermarkets and other points (?) but very few people do not have local PO or delivery office nearby...

its a pity we charge customers for this though, should be doing it free, not £1.50 a time

It says 'for a small fee' in the P739. And I thought it was 50p at least about 2 years ago? (might be wrong)

Like most things, there has to be a charge otherwise it will be abused and the Post Offices only has a small space* to hold things. If it were free they will be inundated and it will turn into another delivery office locker room scenario but this time with bigger queues in the High Street.

£1.50 is still cheap for some of our customers that has to travel at least 8 miles or more. Some local DOs have been closed and merged so some customers has a longer way to the depots - but not as far as most Couriers.

* I was implored by the local PO on my delivery to take some items for a Blind customer to his house directly even though they normally hold the items for him - he is just some blacks away from the PO. But on that occasion he had about 10 big green sacked blind reading materials... The simply told me they could not take them as they have no space - after making 2 trips from the van. I had to deliver direct to him - lucky he was in but my partner started to wonder where I was... (thought i was shopping at the local mart)

The deliverer. Nick Landon, MD of Royal Mail Parcels said that nobody expected the deliverer to try multiple neighbours.

How ridiculous to compare our delivery rates to our competitors. Their delivery rates are bound to be higher than ours as they are normally paid per delivery. Do customers really want their parcels left in the open in all weathers because that's what the likes of Hermes and Yodel do. For once give us some credit for not taking the easy option and responsibly returning undelivered items. I will try a neighbour if they are nearby but you have to be sensible about this. These other companies get hammered in customer satisfaction surveys for their 'dump and run' approach.

Another cost saving measure with little thought to quality you cannot have both savings and quality at the same time!

How this will be interpreted is anyone's guess... apparently there have been attempts made by DIM's in some offices to discipline OPGs for not delivering to neighbour...

yeah I deliver to neighbour all the time,its called your friendly neighbourhood callers office.they can say deliver first time to neighbours ad infinitum but until they quantify the extra time it takes then their blowing bubbles out of a giant arse called s**t talks.
