Essex members plan peak delivery

Postal workers from Essex will be taking their high-capacity trolleys (HCT) to the top of Mount Snowdon this Saturday (7th June) in their latest fund-raising efforts for cancer charity MacMillan.

0Essex Amal CWU delivery representative Keith Elgar will be leading the 16-strong team - who call themselves the Red Barrows - on their quest to complete the climb and descent within six hours.

All but one of our intrepid band of postmen and postwomen work at Southend Delivery Office, the exception being former Southend postman Bob Gibson, who is of course now the CWU's national officer for delivery workers.

"It's 3,500 feet high and we're aiming to start the climb at 12noon and get back down again within six hours," says Keith, adding that the group, which includes four CWU reps, will be wheeling six HCTs up with them.

Keith began raising funds for charity after his son, Daniel, tragically died in a railway accident in 2007. "He was also a postman here at Southend and I wanted to do something in his memory, so that he's remembered in the right way," Keith explains.

And the death of a close colleague, Ken Wright, from cancer a year later pointed Keith towards MacMillan as the cause for which he and others in the branch wanted to direct their efforts, which have included bike rides, marathons, an annual football match and various other activities and which have raised some £30,000.

Since its foundation back in 1911 by a young man, Douglas Macmillan, who saw his own father die of cancer, the charity has been providing practical, medical and financial support for people diagnosed with cancer and their families, funding research and campaigning for better cancer care.
