LTB 335/14 Royal Mail Group Announcement New Sunday Services (RM and Parcelforce)

No: 335/14

21st May 2014

To: All Branches with Postal Members

Dear Colleague

ROYAL MAIL GROUP ANNOUNCEMENT – NEW SUNDAY SERVICES (RM AND PARCELFORCE)

The CWU has today welcomed the announcement by the Royal Mail Group that it is set to launch new Sunday Services in both Royal Mail and Parcelforce this summer.

These initiatives were initially discussed with the Union at the RM/CWU Growth Forum and the timing of the announcement comes following further discussions last week in response to fast moving market developments.

The new Sunday Services announced by the company comprise of the following:-

- From September 2014, in Royal Mail, a pilot of Sunday deliveries (packets and parcels) within the M25 for the core network.

- From late June, in Parcelforce, a Sunday delivery service for online shoppers through participating e-retailers.

- From September 2014, in Royal Mail, the opening of 100 delivery enquiry offices nationwide on Sundays.

- Confirmation that the network has been opened up at weekends for processing parcels, an arrangement that is already operational.

At this stage, although the CWU has given it’s in principle support to the announcement; the company has accepted that immediate negotiations will now take place on the terms, conditions and operational arrangements for these services. In these talks CWU will look at this work being performed on a voluntary basis. The Union will need to balance how we grow these services in a commercially viable way, whilst also ensuring that we have an attractive package for CWU members.

-2-

In our view, the opening up of these Sunday Services is the right response by the company to the rapidly changing dynamics of online retail. It is a clear example of the Agenda for Growth agreement in action and is designed to support the long term employment prospects of CWU members and the future success of the company.

Please ensure that the Union’s position on this issue is immediately conveyed to CWU members in the workplace. To facilitate this we have attached a members’ letter that should be distributed in all workplaces. Further developments will be reported in due course.

Any enquiries on the content of this LTB should be addressed to the DGS(P) Department. Specific enquiries on Parcelforce should be addressed to the appropriate Assistant Secretary.

Yours sincerely

So yesterday RM announce we are delivering less parcels than last year, today they tell us we will deliver this reduced level of parcels over 7 days from September. How does that work? :left:

Delivering 7 days a weeks will not get more parcels through RM, a reduction in price on parcel size/weight that has been identified as where RM lose out now might, but without the price change HCT walks will get even bigger (as less attendence calls) and the number of HCT staff employed will be dropped. :cuppa

Seems ok to me.
On one condition....We will not, ever, deliver mail on sundays!!!
Parcels fine, people will volunteer for that overtime or duty. Same with collection office.
But no way on Earth will they get postmen and women to go out on delivery on a sunday.

"At this stage, although CWU has given it’s in principle support to the announcement; the company has accepted that immediate negotiations will now take place on the terms, conditions and operational arrangements for these services."
Cart before horse springs to mind.
Too much then to expect the CWU to achieve acceptable terms, conditions and operational arrangements for these services BEFORE the CWU has gives it’s in principle support to the announcement
Then after Sunday working has started the CWU accepts piss poor terms, conditions and operational arrangements and sells them to us as the next deal of the century.
