Leatherhead posties deliver on memorial charity bike ride

A TEAM of Leatherhead's postmen and women will take on a cycling challenge this Saturday for the 15th year running in memory of a beloved friend.

Organiser Bob Hogan and other staff at the town's delivery office will pedal from Leatherhead to Littlehampton.

The Leatherhead Spinners team has completed the challenge every year since colleague Geraldine Jones died in 1999, and last year raised more than £17,000.

Ms Jones' leukaemia was treated at The Royal Marsden Hospital for 18 months before she died aged 60.

Mr Hogan said: "Geraldine was being treated in the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton for leukaemia but failed to respond to treatment.

"It was because of the good work we saw in the hospital, and the pure professionalism and dedication of all the staff that I thought it would be a good idea to raise funds to help others.

"Fifteen years down the line, we are still raising money, but the cycling is definitely getting a lot tougher."
