Royal Mail investigates after post found dumped in bushes

Royal Mail has begun an inquiry after a bag of undelivered mail was found dumped in bushes in the Dundee's Baxter Park.

Council park workers found the packages last week and reported it to Royal Mail after they took the mail to a local resident whose name was on some of it.

Cory Campbell (40), of North Lodge, Baxter Park, contacted The Courier and said he was told the undelivered post had been found dumped deep in the bushes.

The park workers then called Royal Mail, who Mr Campbell said arrived very quickly to take the letters and packages away.

He said, "We are just outraged at this, it's not just affecting us -- it's people all around the area. We have been waiting for an Inland Revenue cheque to come for a long time as well as my son's school stuff but when we phone Royal Mail they say there's nothing for us.

"Our regular postie is great, but you don't know who you are going to get when he is off or on holiday. The parks guys were great with us too."

Royal Mail has apologised to customers and immediately began an investigation which, under their statutory powers, could result in the culprit being reported to the procurator fiscal for criminal proceedings to be considered.

A spokesman said, "Royal Mail can confirm that a quantity of mail has been recovered which appears to have been wilfully delayed. Royal Mail is conducting a thorough security investigation to identify who is responsible.

"It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and anyone caught doing so will face serious disciplinary measures and is likely to be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal.

"The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hard-working postmen and women."

The spokesman added, "The recovered mail will be delivered with an apology letter to our customers. We would like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused by this incident and if any customers have any concerns about missing mail they should contact Royal Mail Customer Services on 08457 740 740."

A Tayside Police spokeswoman said the force had been informed of the incident but that Royal Mail was carrying out its own investigation.
