Royal Mail worker in racist rant at Indian man

Royal Mail has apologised after one of its employees shouted racist abuse at an Indian man in what police are treating as a hate crime.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of further attacks, was walking towards Bangor town centre on Friday afternoon when a Royal Mail van drove alongside him and its passenger shouted racist comments at him.

Royal Mail wrote to apologise to the victim's partner after she contacted the company to complain.

She said she was unhappy with the company's response and did not feel the incident was being taken seriously.

However, Royal Mail insisted that it did not tolerate racism and said that any member of staff found to have been involved in such an incident "would be subject to disciplinary procedures".

In a letter to the man's partner, a customer service adviser for Royal Mail told her he was "very sorry" to hear of her "recent experience with one of our colleagues".

He added that "our employees are trained to a high standard and receive continuous coaching, with a strong customer focus – so I apologise if you did not receive the high standards of service that we attain to on this occasion".

The letter continued: "I have passed the details of your complaint onto the relevant manager to action accordingly. Please be assured that we take our customers feeling let down seriously and will use this information to make further improvements."

The man has been living in Northern Ireland for five years and has never been the victim of a hate crime before.

His partner, who he has an 18 month-old son with, said she was furious that the perpetrator had not been disciplined.

"I am very upset by what happened. My partner was reluctant to tell me because he knew I would be upset, but I could tell something had upset him. We have reported the incident to the police and they are treating it as a hate crime," she explained.

"I do not accept this apology from Royal Mail. The person who shouted the racist abuse should be sacked. Royal Mail should be showing that this type of behaviour is not tolerated."

Royal Mail spokeswoman Barbara Roulston said: "There is no room in Royal Mail for racism or any other form of discrimination. We are committed to investigating any complaint thoroughly and would be keen to discuss the incident with the affected parties in further detail so that we can pursue the matter."

She added: "Any member of staff found to have been involved in such an incident would be subject to disciplinary procedures."
