Oldham - Threat to post office needs sorting

Residents are rallying to save a post office and sorting depot that serves several Saddleworth villages.

Dobcross Post Office in Woods Lane includes the village’s only shop - but it, and its sorting office, are threatened by closure in Royal Mail’s plan to move the sorting work to Oldham.

Sukhi Singh’s family has run Dobcross Post Office for 14 years. Locals say the move would have a major impact on customers and the community.

Mr Singh already has backing from local councillors and local MP Debbie Abrahams.

In a letter to the Post Office, the Dobcross Village Community Association said: “It is essential the Post Office and shop remain open. There are many elderly people, people with disabilities and people without transport who rely on the village shop and post office.”

Mr Singh said the sorting office provides almost 70 per cent of the family income; without it the store could close.

A Royal Mail spokesman confirmed the company is looking into moving the current delivery office operation from Dobcross, but said any change would be fully discussed with staff.
