I am not sying firemen don't deserve good pay, pensions and whatever else they are asking for and I am sure someone is trying their hardest to screw them over, but I have been a fireman and in one of the busiest stations in the Midlands and the amount of physical strain is far worse as a postie. Yes a fireman will have the occasional horrible incident that is extremely stressful, physically strenuous and dangerous, but the day on day work of a postie is far more phyically taxing overall. In my opinion.

It probably is. The days of firemen running into burning buildings and carrying people down turntable ladders are over, thanks to better building materials and regulations, no more open coal fires and less bodged DIY gas and electrical installations.
Hardest work now is wearing those plastic pink elephant heads on fire station open days... :whistle

Fireman are workers just like us, lets not compare jobs.
Back to topic - i think maybe binmen/women have to do the same constant physical work as us...Its all too much really. We should get more holidays so our bodies can recover.

Yes, I remember when 80% of men smoked, most houses had a chip pan on the go a couple of times a week and there were no smoke alarms.
That's when firemen had to work for their money. !!!!!!

This jobs more tiring,its constant.
At least on the bins you had mini breaks and could only walk at the pace of the wagon.
But at least here I'm not breathing in all sorts and better paid

I'm 20 years a postie, in my 50's. The job is breaking me. All I do on my day off now is sit on my skinny ass recovering for the next shift.

Told today that a new regime is about to kick in, people not up to speed will be given 18 months to improve or be fired ( that came from our head dom ) Rounds don't need tested because the computer is infallible.

Or I get this a lot " When you were on holiday so and so did your round with 2 hours to spare and hopped backwards every day etc"

All that matters now is share holders profits, they will work us to exhaustion and replace us, perhaps someone should remind them to take moral into their productivity equations.

PS My mate is a fireman, off with stress at the moment due to nightmares caused by all the dead people he has cut out of smashed vehicles.

Being a fisherman is a harder job than this lets be fair. Hauling nets, working at sea inherently dangerous, unsecured income.

Your mate as a fireman is part of a team and doesn't have to face these things alone,he has his crew mates to talk with about it and isn't left on his own to face his demons, unlike say a lorry driver who is often the first on the scene and has to carry on with his job afterwards and often is away from his family and loved ones for days afterwards.

Being a lorry driver is one of the most undervalued jobs around today I'd say. Stobart drivers and most others earn less per hour than posties and are required to work unsocial hours with way more responsibility and arguably stress e.g. busy traffic, sticking to strict driver hours, making deadlines, generally unhealthy working environment sitting all day.

The lorry drivers job can be hard and long hours etc but I saw on the programme about Stobarts drivers they can earn well over 30 grand a year. The lorries they drive now have all mod cons. Its not physically knackering like ours and if they are on regular routes probably not to stressful either.

Real life is a bit different from what you see on TV,they don't show you the bad bits only things that show Stobarts in a good light,it's also very easy to lose your job on Stobarts and to get that sort of money you have to do the maximum allowed hours often starting at 3 or 4 in the morning and coming home late in the evening.

I agree..the lads I saw on telly were 'tramping' ie leaving home early monday morning and not getting home until the following weekend, sleeping in the lorry cab during the week so they earn their money. Must be horrendous doing that in the middle of winter.

Funny enough mate, its far worse in summer when it's roasting in the cab all night, you cannot have any air conditioning with the engine off,at least in winter you can have the night heater working, also a lot of places charge a lot of money for overnight parking and nowadays you aren't safe in a lot of places, pikey's bothering you to sell them some diesel, getting your curtains cut,and until you get allocated your own truck you don't know who or what has been on the bunk in the truck, imagine bedding down for the night in some of our vans,a lot of lorry drivers are just as dirty.
