Hello,
I'm new here and I would like to ask a question if I may.
Recently my Assistant Manager, whom is also our Union Rep, which I do not agree with, has decided to take it upon himself to decide, with our manager and also our second line manager, as he said recently in worktime learning, to change our meal breaks.
Up until now, for the last 12 years I have been working with Royal Mail, our meal breaks are taken when we like them due to the nature of, people either wanting to get home early, for the families, or other reasons, or like myself I take a 40 min break in the middle of my working day.
Our Assistant Manager/Union Rep, without discussion, is planning on enforcing our walking staff, which I am not part of, to take an undisclosed, as of yet, percentage of their meal relief before they go out onto delivery. He has also stated more than once that he will, if needed, enforce people to take ALL their MR before they go on delivery and force them to take this within our office.
This is just the recent tip of the iceberg thats starting to cause problems in our office. This is one situation I would like to start with and get help on.
If there is anyone that wishs to make a comment that is, 'legal work practice' it would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
FC

Re: Joint Statement Delivery: Scotland
Firstly you need to get shot of your Rep... not really sure of the procedure, possibly a vote of no confidence... speak to your Area Rep... ideally someone will have to replace him... you seem quite clued up... give it a go yourself maybe...
Meal relief is a contentious issue in a number of office... the big 'no-no' is putting your meal relief on the end of your duty although it's still a common practice... some offices have all their break before they go out as long as their delivery spans can accommodate this... personally I either have the full 40 out on delivery like yourself or have 20 while out and 20 on the end...
Your Rep is there to represent the local members... yes, sometimes he has to tell you stuff you don't like which the CWU have signed up for... not sure if structured meal breaks falls in to this category unless you all agree to it...

The rep wants to stop people putting their meal relief at the end of the duty and you think they should get rid of him/her?lollollol wrote:Firstly you need to get shot of your Rep.....
If they go and talk to the area rep they will probably get laughed at.
RM can tell you when to take your MR.
It isn't simply a mater of - I'll take it when it suits me.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Joint Statement Delivery: Scotland
The main issue here is the Rep is 'Assistant manager'... can't think of any scenario where this is beneficial to the members... the OP didn't make it clear that the issue re meal breaks relates directly to individuals putting 40 minutes on the end of their duty... if this is the case it does need to be addressed... while many offices do have local agreements re when to take breaks many do not... from memory I believe this is covered under something called the 'Single Daily Delivery Agreement (?)... employees have the flexibility to plan where and when they take their breaks...

Re: Joint Statement Delivery: Scotland
However... the agreement quoted by the OP clearly states that part of break will be taken prior to delivery...
If that's what's agreed there's no getting away from it... what's required asap is some clarity on how much this will be...
But a Rep being a manager of any ilk? No thanks...

Personally I agree unless the rep is a redoubled agent pretending to be a rep, but passing fake union secrets to management while secretly passing management secrets to the union like a poor man's Kim Philby then I wouldn't be having it.lollollol wrote:But a Rep being a manager of any ilk? At the end of the day though it's up to his members not me or you.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
