RE - MR DEREK WALSH - FORMER JOINT GENERAL TREASURER OF THE CWU



It is with great sadness I write to inform branches that Derek Walsh, former Joint General Treasurer of the CWU and General Treasurer of the UCW, died on Thursday 10th April 2014.

A number of branch officers and activists will know that Derek Walsh served the union for many years at every level. He started his employment with the Post Office as a messenger boy in 1950 - soon becoming their union representative in 1951. He had a number of branch positions in SEDO No.2 and was also a Senior Official of the London District Council. In 1979 he was elected to the UCW Executive Council. In 1988 he was elected General Treasurer of the UCW - and seven years later when the UCW merged with the NCU he became the Joint General Treasurer with David Norman - until he retired in 1996.

Of course Derek will be particularly remembered for the major role he played supporting striking workers in the Grunwick Dispute of 1976/7.

We will notify branches of the details of the funeral when this is known.

At this sad time our thoughts are with Derek's family particularly his children, Ray, Alex and Vicki. I have on behalf of the CWU conveyed our deepest sympathy and condolences to them.

Shock death of former town councillor

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Faversham town councillor who died last week following a fire at his home in Yorkletts.

Derek Walsh’s body was recovered following the shed fire in Dargate Road last Thursday, April 10.

Fire crews battled the blaze for some two hours before quelling the flames.

Police said they were working with the fire service but were not treating the incident as suspicious.

Mr Walsh, a widower and father of three, had lived alone at the property.

He had previously served as a member of Faversham Borough Council and had lived in The Knole in Bysingwood.

He continued in his role as a Labour councillor after local government reorganisation resulted in the formation of Faversham Town Council in the early 1970s.

Mr Walsh was a retired trade union officer and colleagues said that he had campaigned passionately for his beliefs for many years.

Former Labour colleague Trevor Payne said: “It’s a shock to hear that he has died.

“He is fondly remembered for his work in support of the local Labour Party and particularly the campaign about post office privatisation.

““It is very sad to see he has gone.”

His union work saw him playing a major role supporting striking postal workers in the Grunwick Dispute of 1976/7.

During his time he also served as joint general treasurer of the Communication Workers Union.

Mr Walsh leaves three children, Ray, Alex and Vicki.

RE: MR DEREK WALSH - FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Further to LTB 238/14 I write to inform branches that we have been notified of the funeral arrangements for Derek Walsh, former Joint General Treasurer of the CWU and General Treasurer of the UCW- who sadly died on 10th April 2014.

The full details of the funeral are as follows:-

Date: Wednesday 30th April 2014
Time: 4.00pm
Location: Barham Crematorium, Canterbury Road
(A260), Barham Nr Canterbury Kent CT4 6QU

This funeral will be followed by a reception at the Ship Inn, 12 Ospringe Street, Ospringe, Faversham, Kent, ME13 8TL.
