Calm before storm' at CWU union conference after Royal Mail sell off

The CWU union conference which begins on Sunday of this week will be the first since Royal Mail was privatised by the government.

The postal service was floated on the stock exchange in October.

Many CWU members were reassured by a deal backed by the union, which gives five years protection on pay and job security and a 9.06 percent pay rise over three years.

But Paul Garraway, a CWU rep in Oxford, told Socialist Worker “This is just the calm before the storm. People haven’t felt the true effects of privatisation yet.

“It’s going to have a major impact, especially if there’s a lot of competition.”

The deal also commits to “building a climate of sustainable trust with a can do culture” and “improving efficiency”—code for increased workloads and a green light for even more bullying and harassment by bosses.

CWU Kent Invicta branch has put a motion to conference which states that members have no confidence in the Royal Mail bullying and harassment process when raising cases against managers.

The agreement came after a national strike was called off. And a clause giving bosses the right to pull out if the union calls a national strike before 2019 effectively makes it a damaging no-strike deal.

“So far Royal Mail has gone for the managers, who are in the Unite union, cutting around 1,600 jobs,” said Paul. “But they will come for our pay and conditions.”

Well I hope it gets passed , as the new process is very weak, mediation is not the way forward for cases of B/H
