Just curious, but I believe it is illegal to open mail delivered by Royal Mail, addressed to someone else. Would that also apply to mail sent through TNT or another courier company?

as soon as it have been delivered to the correct address it is no longer classed as mail as defined by the postal services act and as such not illegal to be opened by someone else, the same rule should apply to tnt i believe
