Pensioners in Sealand are living in fear of being followed home by thieves from their post office.

Cllr Chris Jones claims the new layout of the Garden City branch is not secure, unsafe and lacks privacy, putting both residents and staff at risk from opportunist crooks.

It is now open to customers from 7am-11pm and services are offered from a till on the Spar’s retail counter, rather than a separate security-screened counter.

The changes are part of a major modernisation project by the Post Office which affects more than 6,000 branches.

Cllr Jones argues no consideration was given to safety or security when the shop was redesigned and her pleas during the consultation stage went ignored.

She said: “When the older residents go for their pension people can stand right behind them and watch exactly what they are doing.

“They’re scared of being followed home.

“Anyone picking up parcels or benefits are at risk as well.

“There is no privacy, no security – its a real worry. You just don’t know who is watching.

“These people shouldn’t have to live in fear.

“They should be able to go about their daily business without worry.

“Its just not on.”

“This was one of my fears during the consultation and I feel like that plea has been ignored.”

Cllr Jones argues that the Post Office should have had ‘more sense’ when redesigning the shop and has criticised them for failing to put the safety of customers and staff first.

“The post office doesn’t need to be open until 11pm – its ridiculous.

“Safety should have been their first consideration, they need to bare things like this in mind when carrying out a modernisation.

“Public safety is paramount.”

Cllr Jones says that many of her residents are now opting to use the Queensferry branch ‘for a bit of privacy’.

She said: “The Post Office in Garden City is losing custom but its their own fault!”

A spokesman for the Post Office said: “The safety and security of customers and sub-postmasters is very important to the Post Office.

“Although the local style branch provides service in a different way, security or privacy is not compromised.”

“As with any other branch, we have robust security procedures in place, and anyone handling Post Office transactions, including new staff, are fully trained on all operational and service issues, including customer privacy.”

They added: “The modernisation of the branch has resulted in many benefits for customers, including much greater convenience through the almost 120 hours a week opening hours on offer to access Post Office products and services.”
