I've never complained about having too much work because I know a lot of people who haven't got any - and I would rather have my lifestyle than theirs !

Oh what a good idea lets have 20 d2ds a week then RM may take on more staff to cope with the extra workload, I don't think so!
Considering 20 lots of D2D would rake in £600+ per week on the average walk, I'm sure RM would happily reduce walk
lengths and increase staff numbers.

It isn't really rocket science.
The less work you have going through your DO, the less jobs you are able to sustain.
If 10 D2D/week secured my job and the jobs of my colleagues I would happily do them.

And if you really don't want to do them, then don't.
Tell your manager you are refusing to do them, then go home, put the kettle on and look for a new job.
But at least be a man about it.
:thumbup 4day weeks..by the sounds of it he doesn't want to work 1 day :left: if you don't want to work mate leave plenty of people ready to take your job :nana

I don't think 'door-to-doors' have anything to do with keeping posties in work, and nor do they always relate to encouraging individuals to purchase something. Some are for information only (i.e. not from businesses, but the NHS from example).

The issue many find difficult to deal with is how to fit large amounts of mail into frames, sometimes old, incapable frames, on busy days, often a Wednesday or Thursday, take out overweight bags (try getting management to agree that it is ok to leave your overloaded bag!), then deliver your multi-shaped, flimsy, awkward material through tiny, half-opening letterboxes or wall boxes, in the rain, without mashing the contents entirely.

Customers often say things like "more rubbish", and proceed to put the newly-delivered material in the bin/recycling bin. Thanks.

So, it seems most people don't appreciate "more rubbish", and the material causes posties a huge headache... and backache, while making money for Royal Mail. A simple thought though: who would any business conduct such activities that irritate its customers so much, with the potential to seriously damage its own reputation, simply to earn money? Which is more important: reputation, or revenue?

I'll leave that question for others to answer, along with the thought that there is far more to a business than making money, and when it comes to Royal Mail, the service we provide, and have provided for a very long time is one that is integral in our society, and a fundamental part of the community, but for how much longer?

Maybe "door-to-doors" should be renamed "bin-to-bin", since this is where most of the material ends up...

Royal Mail’s Report & Accounts for 2011-2012 show a small operating profit of £211 million.
Revenue from marketing mail during this period was £1,063 million.
You’re living in cloud cuckoo land if you “don't think 'door-to-doors' have anything to do with keeping posties in work.”

Something else you might want to consider is that it is not just posties who benefit from this work. Think of the designers, the print industry, paper manufacturers, and all their suppliers. Couple that with a recycling industry.

I am fully aware of the beneficiaries from "door-to-door" material, however my point was more centred around whether people (our customers) want to receive and appreciate receiving such material, and the manner in which the material is received. I don't think many customers do want to receive it.

The other aspect is the expectation of Royal Mail when it comes to delivering such material. What expectation? Being able to deliver a high standard of service... try delivering this loose material, bound up with multiple shapes in the wind and rain without ruining it. Not an easy task. I hear many individuals complain about this fact, when there is an easy solution: only deliver the material already bound or packaged appropriately. Much of it is not sent out this way.

If the job needs to be done, do it properly. Nothing worse than soaked "door-to-door" material that starts to break up as posties try to deliver it. Some posties card about what they do, while some don't.

I think RM should bundle the D2Ds up and have something along these lines printed on it, to explain it to customers that dont want it.

But the customers that the message would be aimed at wouldn't be interested, so it wouldn't make any difference.

We have 7 lots this week. Took about half an hour to put them in this morning so quite a few of us didn't get out until late. There were people coming in an hour early (unpaid) just so they could put them in.

It will get to a critical point when the customers will bite back. So far, we almost force the D2D unto the customers by making them opt-out instead of opt-in.

When we get to 10 d2ds, a lot of customers will make a lot of noise and the politicians might be forced to act (re: opt-in instead of opt-out). At the end of the day Royal Mail will soon be entirely privatised and the govt can continue to protect RM.

The stats on the effectiveness of D2Ds is a bit bogus. When you lump all the d2ds together, the stats might look OK because there are some informational and even popular d2ds but the majority are rubbish - never read and straight into the bin.

Any feedback from door 2 door automatic bungle up from a trial in unknown West Midlands Delivery office. When it happens it will give Royal Mail one big headache about those postal workers on light duty.

Look at it from an other angle, all those resources could be managed in a more constructive way, still giving employment and the rest........ and wait for it, a better quality of life for the majority. Sadly the likes of bankers, directors and their likes would have a massive pay cut along with an increased work load. Would that bother me, no.
