Safety aspects aside it does look unprofessional/rude if a member of the public tries to get your attention and you inadvertently ignore them.

What makes you think it's inadvertent. :Very Happy It's the perfect excuse when you are trying to avoid the local bore.

Never mind headphones, I can hear my postie a mile of, he walks along with mobile phone tucked in his chin, and chatters away non stop!

There's huge difference between wearing them in both ears at a high volume and only wearing one that's barely audible.

Also strikes me as rather strange that bags on the shoulder are an issue!

The main reason I listen to the radio through my headphones is I suffer from tinnitus. It helps keep me sane. I will continue using them and if I'm disciplined, then so be it.
What have I done to deserve this?

None is stopping me wearing headphones and listening to my tunes, they can do one! I'll just wear them under the beanie hat like that waterboy did for Chelsea when Mourinho got sent a touchline ban :dance
