Workplace coach.

Post by DICK43 »

They are trying to recruit a workplace coach at our delivery office, unfortunately, they are being very vague about what is expected of you for an extra £30 a week!, just wondered if anyone could give an idea of what this extra work will entail, and how you would fit it into an already very packed schedule?...

Walk training the new entrants taking them out on your walk and helping them when there on their own ,showing people how to use equipment PDA etc and doing what the manager tells you to do.

We got a new workplane coach in our office who just so happens to be the PHG / Delivery support, I Don't
know how much they can teach us about deliveries when they only work inside, Maybe
the coach is slipping the manager some of the £30 per week for letting them have the job, And
not telling any of us about the available position. No seniority or pick list in our office.
A Pitty really might of been a good job. Naughty DOM :no no

My advice take the position at least you got to hear about it and £30 extra per week, :nana

There are 4 or 5 workplace coaches at our office and their job is as Slysi16 says, to deal with new starters, train people with PDA's and do loads of WCM stuff too. They are always being withdrawn to stick pointless bits of paper on fittings, etc. The jobs were advertised though!

Exactly the same in our D.O. ... No advertising of the position at all, yet we discovered our PHG has become the workplace coach on an extra £30 a week, he's been at it for about 3 years now and NEVER even had to train anyone up in that time, what few new faces we've had have either transferred from other areas or were trained up by whoever they were shadowing for a couple of days.

You need to put a grievance in or get your rep to go into disagreement, the workplace coach is not picked on seniority, it's not picked on who the DOM likes, it has to be advertised and all candidates interested have to be interviewed, if your DOM hasn't done this then he has clearly breached the agreement and should be held accountable.

Complain, complain and then complain again, RM is becoming a crap workplace because we let the f*ckers get away with crap like this.

Best forget what a Work Place Coach does currently for their extra £34 per week.

I expect to see this role change quite dramatically in the very near future. World Class Mail (assuming this shite is still going), achieving productivity targets, can-do culture, and incentive schemes – these are the areas that I imagine the WPC will get dragged into.

Prepare for unpopularity in a role that will leave you having to implement the unjust and unworkable for management.

A job somewhere between boatswain and stool pigeon awaits. Good luck!

LTB No. 111/14 Ref: 230 Date: 17th February 2014

To: Branches with POSTAL Members

Dear Colleague

Workplace Coaches (WPC) in Delivery

The department is currently engaged in national talks with Royal Mail regarding Workplace Coaches (WPC) in delivery offices. Both parties have agreed that the existing agreement is out of date and needs to be revised and brought up to date. The first meeting took place over 3 weeks ago and on Friday last week we received a draft proposal from Royal Mail which is now under consideration. Further meetings are now being scheduled.

At the meeting 3 weeks ago we were informed that as far as the recruitment of WPC is concerned Royal Mail were still recruiting BAU coaches, but not using the full new process.

Branches should note that the use of any new process at this point in time would not be acceptable to the CWU as it is currently unagreed and any such proposals should be dealt with via the IR Framework. To be absolutely clear we have no objection to WPC being recruited to the agreed levels as stated in the national agreement where there are vacancies, and it is being done in line with the existing national agreement.

Any such instances where the national agreement is not being followed should also be brought to the attention of the department as a matter of urgency.

Any enquiries to Bob Gibson’s Office, quoting reference 230
Email address: hnutley@cwu.org

Yours sincerely

If nothing has been agreed yet with the CWU then why are all the WPC's going on courses over the next couple of weeks depending on area.

...because usually nobody has the balls to stop it so RM do it because they are allowed to get away with it.

Let Bob know (bgibson@cwu.org), or through Hayley as requested at the bottom of the LTB.

Just done the online application for workplace coach. If you like to train and show people what to do then its a good thing. It was advertised in our office so I giving it a go. £30 a week extra can't be bad. See how it goes.........

That is not the agreed procedure for workplace coaches, this is!
4. Selection Process

4.1 Advertisement/Application

All OPG employees will be able to apply for these posts but they will need to be experienced professional Postwomen and men and applications will be objectively assessed by a three stage process as detailed below to establish which candidates are suitable. An example notice advertising the role is attached.

4.2 Self-assessment

•Stage 1
Interested employees will complete a self-assessment form (see Appendix 1) to help them decide whether they should apply formally, and if they do they will need to complete an application form (see Appendix 2).

• Stage 2
The Line Manager at each workplace providing they are RIT trained (using a process designed by Learning Services) will assess the formal applications and select the candidates to interview. Where assistance is requested by the Line Manager or they have not been RIT trained, a representative from P & OD will also be in attendance at the interview. At the interview an objective decision will then be made on who should be recommended to attend a three day Coaching Course. All interviewed applicants will receive feedback from their Manager on the Recruitment Activity Performance Summary Form and they will be given the opportunity to complete a confidential questionnaire concerning the interview process. The Manager will also complete a section on the form stating the reason for selection or non selection.

• Stage 3
A Regional Trainer from People & Organisational Services will run the Coaching/Training Course and will make the final decision to formally confirm those applicants considered competent to fulfil the role.

4.3 Appeals against non selection

There is an appeal process against non-selection and all documentation concerning the selection process will be made available prior to the appeal being held. The details of the appeal process is contained at Appendix 3.

Been doing the WPC thing for the last three years. It's basically about guiding new entrants. However, and it's a big however, I've just done the WPC course which was crap and stuffed full of nonsense about world class mail. I pointed out that WCM was up for review by June but the trainer (a WCM "leader") seemed to become somewhat deaf at that point.
I used to really enjoy being a coach but suspect that we're being trained up for some sort of "leadership" role in the not too distant future. Once they've culled the managers the coaches will become quasi-supervisors. At that point I'll be considering whether I can be bought for £34 a week.

There are notices up in our office asking for applications and what the wpc role involves - it's a whole lot more than showing new people what to do. When WCM comes and managers start to be culled it looks to me as though the role will basically be a managers helper. £34 a week for that? No thanks.

Exactly how I see it, WCM is coming to our office very shortly and these wpc roles are linked to it. The notices have a whole list of responsibilities including H&S, D2D quality. PDA training, manual handling, retraining existing staff who are identified as needing it and plenty of other stuff I can't remember.
