Strange logic, I shall wear a bandanna over my eyes tomorrow, I should be just as safe as those who don't after all more people are killed crossing the road when they aren't wearing one.

It was announced during our WTL today that we can no longer wear headphones on our round, due to H&S. I like to listen to the radio, Radio 4 or talksport normally, so no loud music. This is the one bit of enjoyment I have left whilst doing this job.

Get a rural driving duty then you can listen to whatever you like at whatever volume you like.

How much more boring do RM want to make this job? I listen to speech radio at a low level. I can still hear everything around me and remove them when dealing with customers. Worn them for several years and never had any H&S issues. This company just wants to turn us all into robots.

I'm in favour of a ban. I work with quite a few people who use them constantly, both on delivery and in the office. They are the most boring people to work with as their communication with fellow humans is virtually non-existent and this does affect their work as they need to be told instructions several times. Also I have known the public manhandle them to get their attention, and one issue resulted in a fight in the street!

I listen to BBC 5 Live at low volume whilst out on route. Never had a 'elf & safety' issue with crossing roads, customers, spatial awareness or any other issues. I will continue to enjoy my DAB radio as usual and ignore this trite, petty and vindictive nonsense...

I dont wear mine on the walk,but have to wear them when in the office as hearing the same cnuts moaning about the same things day in day out gets a bit draining after 20+ years.Also its a life saver at xmas as from the middle of november to christmas day the office radio plays the same songs they've done for decades

we have a deaf woman working on rural deliveries does this mean she will not be allowed out of the office & working indoors aint safe she might not hear the fire alarm.

I can fully understand where RM are coming from. Only last weekend was out with hubby, when a young female just biked across the road in front of us. I looked and she was singing happily away, did not even realise that she nearly was hit by us.

we better ban using vehicles if we want to be really safe !

id like to see some stats on headphone use causing injury, must be in the 100s - if that, per year.
People citing others misuse of headphones (while cycling) isnt a legitimate argument against letting people not use headphones for safety reasons.


UPDATE - did a quick bit of research, 116 deaths over 8 years in the whole of america, so 14 deaths per year in a country 5 times the size. As a comparison, in the US there is on average 17 toaster related deaths per year.

I think you will find headphones have always been banned out on delivery. It's not a new rule. Read the SSOW guide and also I think you will find in union safety information in relation to this.
