Rep can't tell you, he is advising you. If you thinks his advice is wrong or you don't want to follow it you don't have to. However, you and your colleagues should only do so in the full knowledge of the consequences that will follow.

What is the point in finishing your delivery, then sitting around in the office until home time. It's not school ! That's what the job is all about. Do your round and go home.

This is indeed a quote from the past, Leighton&Crozier went a very long time ago,if you have the capacity to Lapse/ Absorb then what are your issues, if you want more Lapsing instead of sitting on your frames then so be it, but think of the poor sod who don't get to work because of this Mantra (attitude)

For the record a union who is demanding the top conditions in the postal sector for its workers would look rather silly also arguing that we want better pay per hour but by the way we don't want our members to work those hours.

That's not to say on certain days people will not finish early , clearly work is variable during periods through out the year and even on certain days. Plus if individuals come in early before their duty then on most occasions they are doing this to finish early.

Now what will change this is the growth opportunities which exist in tracking parcels and certain streams in letters.

I attended a presentation on Royal Mails PDA strategy last week.

Tracked items last years in RM increased by 58% and are scheduled to grow by about 38%. Tracking items is clearly what many customers want.

DPD has been tracking items since 1986.

Currently Royal Mail use the CN3 PDA supplied by Blackbay and a standard software Delivery Connect.

Royal Mail want to upgrade to the CN70 which DPD use but that will take some time.

However even now the software from the current PDA allows them to track the route of a postman and women on their delivery every day , it allows them to predict with real life information the time or range of time you delivery to an address over the course of a week or even longer period. It can identify where delivery to neighbour has been used.

The PDA currently sends an heartbeat from the PDA every 90 seconds which shows latitude and longitude of where the PDA is. This information is available to the DOM now but is rarely used.

But Royal Mail see this as a massive opportunity for growth in parcels as the aim is to have all our parcels barcoded by the end of this year. Then tracking will be available for all parcels and obviously Royal. Mail will be able to offer a higher price for tracking premium parcels.

Of course Royal Mail see a benefit in using PDAs as a outdoor revision tool and a resourcing tool.

The data from PDAs are being reviewed in the 20 offices from the national review. The dats shows when the it was logged on and then the route and the heartbeat has been changed to every 30 seconds and shows this information for every PDA route.

The PDA is going to change the delivery job in a big way.

The thing is that the extra 20 calls can easily be upped to 40 and so on and so on until you work pretty much the hours that you are contracted. Thus you will actually be working more instead of going at a reasonable pace and/or coming back to the depot to chill out and possible interact with your colleagues.

* Furthermore, because the deliveries are not equal and work is variable for different walks on different days, then 20 calls might be OK for you but it will push some over the time. With PDA monitoring, you manager can always send you a message to come back to the office to do additional work as they can track you all the way.

Are we still adopting job and finish because in our office a lot of guys are going home about 1 hr early after finishing their walk, the dom says nothing to them

Anyway isn't that two separate issues? Job and Finish (Going straight home after you are finished rather than going back to the office), and finishing early?

The title of the thread is 'Job and Finish', yet the whole long thread is about finishing early.

We have lots of people that go straight home, regardless of what time they finish. They write any overtime down the next morning. We even have full time passengers dropped off at home by their part time park and loop drivers. This isn't necessarily wrong, but it does bring up the issue of part timers claiming overtime for extra driving, and having to do all the work back at the office alone.

Anyway, it seems in some offices the manager expects everyone to go back to the office after their duty, and in some, like mine, they just don't care.
