A post office had an unexpected delivery on Saturday after high winds sent a metal shed soaring into the air before it smashed into a fleet of vans.

Damage to vans at Brandon Post Office depot after a metal shed was blown into its yard

The shed was torn out of its base at the former police station yard on High Street, Brandon, before crashing into several vehicles, putting a large gash in the roof of one.

Lee Jacobs, from Brandon Post Office, said staff had come into work to find the shed strewn across the yard.

“We got there at 6am and it was like the Wizard of Oz. The shed had been ripped out of the ground, gone over Barclays Bank, taken all the barbed wire out of the top of the fence and then wrapped itself round our vans.

“One of the vans has got opened up and it’s lucky none of the guys here were about as someone might have got hurt,” he said.

The incident caused havoc for postal workers, who had to scrabble around to find vans from other depots to continue with their rounds.

High winds also made it too dangerous for staff to cycle on their round, meaning bicycles had to be used as barrows to complete deliveries.

Despite the disruption, deliveries were still able to completed.

Mr Jacobs added that the conditions had made it clear that plans to close the Royal Mail sorting office in Ipswich were misguided.

“There was all sorts going on, including the Orwell Bridge having to close. You wonder if they could finish the rounds if the nearest depot is in Chelmsford,” he said.

Jeeze, if it did that to a van thank f**k no poor posties were in the vicinity at the time, would have decapitated somebody or caused terrible injuries. Just waiting for the first bellend member of the public to post a letter through the slot in the van roof.....
