A POST box in Lizzy Yarnold’s home village of West Kingsdown has been painted gold by vandals.

The box on Hever Road was targeted overnight.

Chronicle editor Gabriel Shepard said: “However well meaning, it’s unfortunate that someone has decided to take the matter into their own hands.

“Lizzy deserves a first class and permanent tribute to her success - not a botched job carried out in the dead of night.

“Our campaign urging Royal Mail to Paint It Gold For Lizzy continues to gather pace and we are close to getting 50,000 signatures.”

Royal Mail has repeatedly refused to paint a box gold in honour of Lizzy’s victory in the women’s skeleton last week.

The company claims the move in 2012 to honour gold medallists was a one-off for the London Games.

Help change their mind by signing up here and by tweeting @royalmail with the hashtag #PaintItGoldForLizzy

A man who daubed a post box in Lymington in 2012 to honour Olympic champion Sir Ben Ainslie was held by police at the time for criminal damage.

Following a campaign and intervention from the quadruple Olympic-winning sailor himself, police later said they would be taking no further action after Royal Mail's complaint of "vandalism" was withdrawn.

West Kingsdown tradesman creates golden post box for Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold

WEST Kingsdown will get a golden post box of sorts, whether or not Royal Mail relents on its snub.

Residents were upset to hear that the post box on Hever Road would not be painted gold to mark Lizzy Yarnold’s Olympic success.

But Royal Mail’s refusal to give the village its own commemorative pillar prompted a local

tradesman to take action.

Terry Malone, owner of Terry Malone Professional Carpentry and Joinery, on Millfield Road, created a post box out of wood and painted it gold.

He said: “I thought it was such a shame that Royal Mail wasn’t going to extend the gesture so I took it into my own hands.

“I make post boxes like this one for weddings so people can post messages and I thought it would be nice to have one for the village to show their support for Lizzy.

“I have had a lot of support for the idea and it goes to show how proud the village are of Lizzy. It will be nice to have a golden postbox in West Kingsdown, even if Royal Mail doesn’t change its mind.”

“I look forward to the day my 18-month-old son Oscar asks why our local post box is gold when others are red, and the possibilities that the answer could inspire him to.”

Starting today at the flower and gift shop on Hever Road, the homemade post box will be placed in businesses around the village, including the Portobello Inn, the and Lizzy’s former workplace – Brands Hatch.

Lizzy will then be presented with the messages of congratulations and support.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It's good that our collection points are seen by many as a thing of beauty and are proud to see them on our streets. They could just as well paint a local dustcart gold or a local bus.
Why are lino's paid full-time ??

The Vandals were an East Germanic tribe, or group of tribes, who lived in the south of what is today Poland.

And is this going to be the case for every Olympics, summer and winter in the future? What about the World and European Championships or the Commonwealth Games. You can be certain there will always be some idiot who will decide that actually winning the gold medal and all the consequent media coverage in those events isn't enough recognition either.

This was meant to be a short-term recognition for successful home nation competitors in the summer Olympics held in London. Then there was a protest over the fact that the boxes would be subsequently painted over red again so they had to stay gold permanently, then some people decided they didn't like where the "gold" box was located and moaned about that now we have moaning about a completely different competition. Some people are never satisfied.

Gold Arriva bus to celebebrate Winter Olympics victory of Lizzy Yarnold from West Kingsdown and former Maidstone Grammar School for Girls pupil

The Royal Mail might be refusing to paint a post box gold to honour Kent's Olympics hero Lizzy Yarnold, but a more eye-catching tribute as been announced today.

Work has started to spray an Arriva bus that covers her hometown route gold.

The bus will run on the number 478 route, which runs through West Kingsdown and the nearby villages of Eynsford and Farningham on its way to Swanley.

Richard Lewis, from Arriva, said "We are proud of Lizzy's achievement and, as we serve her local community, we felt that a gold bus would be a fitting way to draw attention to her success.

"Unlike a post box, our bus will be seen by large numbers of people every day over a wide area as it travels between Lizzy's home village and the nearby town of Swanley."

The bus is being painted in Watford and will be back in service next week, he added.

Yarnold was chosen to carry the Union flag and lead the GB team at the closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics at the weekend.

The 25-year-old former Maidstone Grammar School for Girls student, from West Kingsdown, won Great Britain's first gold medal of the Olympics when she claimed victory in the women's skeleton competition.

Yarnold went into the Games as one of Team GB's brightest medal hopes and she lived up to expectations by blowing away the rest of the field.

She was chosen to carry the flag, as winner of one of only 10 gold medals in British Winter Olympic history, by Team GB chief Mike Hay and his deputies.

Last week, a post box was painted gold by vandals in Hever Road, West Kingsdown, after Royal Mail said it had no plans to decorate postboxes for Sochi winners - like it did for gold medallists at London 2012.

Such a gold bus would be a health and safety hazard in London, camouflaged on the streets there.
