ARMED robbers have stolen cash from a post office in Bilton.

Two hammer-wielding men smashed through glass protecting the postmistress, who was alone in the shop, during the raid at 4.50pm yesterday. They then grabbed a coin dispenser and fled.

It is the second armed robbery at an East Yorkshire post office in the past month. However, detectives do not believe it is linked to a raid at a post office in Hornsea on January 27.

Detective Inspector Emma Heatley said: "This was a terrifying ordeal was for the postmistress, who is being supported by ourselves and her family. The best thing I can do for her is to catch the men who did this."

The post office is in Main Road, Bilton, near the junction with Holmes Lane. The two men, who were wearing balaclavas and camouflage jackets, fled the scene in a Mazda MX5, which was later found abandoned in Bilton with its engine still running.

Anyone with information is asked to call Humberside Police on 101.
