Are you having a laugh, Both staunch Unionists? Governor of the Bank of England has been totally impartial.

So some minor non-entity "believes" and "argues" and you'd take that over Barrosso's view? But Professor Sir David Edward, a former European Court judge, believes that Scotland and the rest of the UK would be in a comparable position.
There would be no need for a new accession treaty, he argued
Don't be so naive, The Governor of the Bank of England is paid a great deal of money to look after the interests of the Bank of England, not to be impartial, That doesn't make what he says necessarily wrong, It just means he'll put the interests of the Bank of England first...because that's what he's paid to do.simply_the_best wrote:Governor of the Bank of England has been totally impartial.
It took 10 years for Czechoslovakia to sort out the separation issues during the split into Czech Republic and Slovakia.dvbuk55 wrote:I must confess I know nothing of the political or financial ramifications of either a yes or no vote, in fact the last time I was in Scotland the pubs couldn't open on Sundays but I think the same applied to Wales at the time in the early 70s or late 60s.
If I was a pro voter I'd be concerned about the lack of a Plan B or in fact any substance to a Plan A if there is one other than vote Yes.
However I digress, if it is a Yes vote is there a time scale for the separation to take place. Regardless of the money and membership of the EU I would imagine it would be a fairly lengthy process to effect the separation.
Wow, that's certainly a long progression but understandable under the circumstances. I don't know that I'd see the culmination of the change if it took ten years.NWpostie wrote:It took 10 years for Czechoslovakia to sort out the separation issues during the split into Czech Republic and Slovakia.
So to follow that line of argument, he must clearly recognise it would be bad for the interests of the Bank of England then?Don't be so naive, The Governor of the Bank of England is paid a great deal of money to look after the interests of the Bank of England,
As I stated in my post it doesn't make what he says necessarily wrong, I'm not an economist so I wouldn't know. My point was simply about perceived impartiality. I don't really think anyone involved in the Independence debate could really be called impartial, Everyone appears to be protecting their own interests and the actual question of self-determination seems to have been forgotten.Tman wrote:So he's either impartial and said currency union would be bad news, or working in the interests of the BoE and also still stating currency union would be bad news.
The warning from the president of the European commission, José Manuel Barroso, that an application by an independent Scotland to join the European Union would be "difficult if not impossible" to negotiate is both politically maladroit and unlikely to improve Barrosso's lamentable record in running the EU's executive for the past 10 years as he now prepares to leave office.
In seeking to frighten Scottish voters with dire predictions that the Spanish government might veto any Scottish EU membership application, he was, of course, merely mimicking identical declarations by David Cameron and the main Scottish unionist leaders. They have all stressed that Madrid would probably block Scotland for fear that otherwise the growing movement for Catalan independence would become irresistible.
But the language being used by the Spanish government does not support these dire predictions. In a recent interview the Spanish foreign minister, José Manuel Garcia-Margallo, stated that a Scottish EU application should be considered in the event of a Yes victory in the referendum. He went on to insist: "If Britain's constitutional order allows – and it seems that it does – Scotland to choose independence, we have nothing to say about this."
