Family Medical Leave

Post by armitage »

I was just wondering what Royal Mail/CWU stance is on pay/leave for a 'Family Medical' incident?

My 2 lads were (Still are) ill on Thursday 13th February , so I called in work to say I would not be in.

I took them to the doctors that morning and child 1 (5 yrs old) was diagnosed with a viral infection & child 2 (16 months old) was diagnosed with an ear infection and put on a course of antibiotics & given an appoitment to re-attend in 2wks time.

I was also off on the Friday (14th) as the childminder would not be able to have my child as he was unwell.

Work have told me that both days are to be taken off my annual leave next week and am therefore expected to be in work Monday (17th) and Tuesday (18th).

From my understanding I should be entitled to at least 1 day off paid for a 'Family Medical' incident with the possibility of an extra 2 dependent on Manager's discretion.

FAMILY MEDICAL PROBLEM

Urgent indicates an immediate need, the provision with pay should normally be one day, with further days unpaid or covered by holiday entitlement. Exceptional circumstances might warrant 3 days. Where regular treatment is occurring the employee should try and get appointments outside work hours and Post Office Ltd should help by arranging changes to working hours wherever possible. Managers should treat requests for additional time off with sympathy bearing in mind that a stoppage of pay will add to the stress of hospital treatment.
It should be noted that taking someone to hospital for an arranged appointment is not Special Leave A, but should be taken as Unpaid or Annual Leave.

Just say sorry I won't be in on any of those days as you can't get childcare cover for that week!
