Do you think 20 is enough or is that just for starters. I do not expect them to do far too many but only 20?

i,ve had a part timer on with me this last few weeks in place of my regular driver who is off sick. he,s on a 20 hr contract. he's a driver, but he's due to finish at 13.00. my finishing time is ''last letter 14.30. 10 mins to get back to office and pouch off etc, then the last 20min of my break. how do they plan these partnerships. he,s doing forced overtime.

It is kinda obvious that there is something wrong with the set-ip in Motherwell. Some many part-timers and they appear to be the 20-something hours type and they are being asked to come in an hour early, sometimes. It looks like the office is deliberately being understaffed and they have taken on many 25 hours (?) staff who are probably desperate for OT to make up for the shortfall, when it arises.

That is probably the case in reality, but it is very much up to each individual to work to their time or if it suits, complete and book overtime. Unfortunately we do not have a Union that is strong enough, collective enough and has the support structures to protect each individual and it is now up to each person to stand up and not be a victim of the vindictiveness of Royal Mail management.

thing is, with new starters, they will be asked to be more flexible, and if they dont want to go over their time they know their contracts wont get renewed.

No, they are looking at how you operate and what problems or issues you have. Its nothing to do with changes to working practices or revisions.

Judging by the Voice centrespread it looks like a magical mystery tour with Bob Gibson, one which we are meant to believe neither the CWU nor Royal Mail know where it will all end up.
Why cant there be at least an outline of where the union are going with this as trying to pretend that visits to a tiny percentage of offices is going to make a big impact on the position Royal Mail took during 10 months of talks is to say the least not very likely.

It would help if Unit Reps were more honest.
According to CWU unit rep , “sometimes, they call the part-time staff in early, for 8.30am.” But he adds that no-one comes in early to start their shift before their time and that everyone takes their meal relief.
Let's be fair I don't think there is an office in the country where that's the case. 99 staff and not one starts before their time and every single one takes their meal relief?
Come on mate, you're not doing anyone any favours trying to big yourself up to the top bods.

Remember that Bob Gibson was actually at this particular review visit: CWU has clearly briefed the Rep... And why do they think it was important to put that in the Voice... Perhaps, it is because it is actually because people are probably coming in early and not taking breaks.

I detect a 'Whitewash'; and CWU are going to be complicit - no doubt!

My fear about this review is that it will show that there is hardly any problems in delivery and it might go as far to show that delivery staff in general are actually working less than the hours they are paid - that was already part of the conclusion on the fatigue studies.

Furthermore, RM will use this Review to further bring in more changes that will benefit them, in the main.: first time delivery, PDA tracking, revised walks, more efficiency initiatives and savings. And definitely more flexibility and more resourcing to workload - closer to the models in mail centres - with use of Temps and posties on 20 hours short contracts gagging for OT.

Of course, the CWU already claim to have won - no use of PDA to monitor, no annualised hours and no more efficiency drive. And they are already claiming to have stopped RM from doing this and doing that - and we are not even in the first month of the Agreement, yet.

Is this Business Model going to stay exactly the same for the next 5 years? Me thinks not. :hmmmm

I dont think they are saying there will be no more efficiency drives. On the contrary Dave Ward has issued a LTB today in which efficiency is mentioned.

For the record Deliveries make up 82% of the membership who will vote in the agreement .

Dvbuk you miss the point again. BT 2010 changed deliveries by revisions , delivery methods , automation , longer Saturdays and though new ways of working such as IWM.

This agreement has no changes to delivery as the CWU blocked annualised hours , blocked further savings and blocked continuous improvement in terms of resoucing.

Now it's true the CWU did not get all they wanted out of it but neither did Royal Mail.

A lot of the issues will be picked up in either the review or the longer term agreement.

So which is it?
Obviously, I was paraphrasing... But I think the sentiment is still within the ball park. I should also mention that I will not expect any less from an Employer especially a newly privatised employer. I was just saying... We should be prepared for more changes in delivery - and there will be winners and losers, as usual.

Let's be clear.ever since I came into the job almost 30 years ago Royal Mail have always wanted further efficiencies almost every year. This even happened when we had no digital revolution, no competition , no alternative end to end delivery provider and no DSA.

In this competitive market where customers change providers for Peanuts and with an alternative end to end service which will cover 40% of addresses in the UK and with 50% of our profitable Mail now going by DSA and that the growth in parcels which make up 52% of Royal Mail a revenue then it will always be about more efficiency.

We have clearly stopped the profiters and shareholders from franchising , outsourcing , breaking up the company and Introducing a 2 tier workforce which has blighted British Gas , British telecom , Water board , British rail , Electricity and dozens of other privatised industries

Now improved efficiency can come from a range of things automation , circulation changes ie Mail centre closures , improved working methods , resourcing to work load , more door to door , more packets , more delivery points and numerous of other issues.

The CWU and Royal Mail now have to review what is Royal mails current plan on efficiency to see if it is accurate , realistic , sustainable and achievable? You see if you have an office say at 100 BSI but 20 people are coming in early then they are not working at 100 they are work less but because those figures do not reflect the fact someone is coming in before their time then it assumed that the indoor performance is being clears only by the hours which the revision agreed.

It's now about making sure that we agree what is a. Realistic efficiency target.
