You're not correct.

And some people are willing to help others, out of the goodness of their heart.
Some people care about their colleagues.
And quite frankly, if Reps were paid, and that was the only reason people would take on the role, then I think most would be useless at it.
As they would be in it for the wrong reason.

I suspect that you would fall into that category.
If you don't believe the replies you have, apply for the role and ask the Branch secretary how much you get. Bet they laugh at you.
Don't start judging people or jump to STUPID conclusion because of an innocent question.

if they move up the CWU tree they can get full time release from their duties, thats one reason for doing the job
A bad one.
yup completely agree, also can be used as stepping stone as well if the person has political aspirations, also if you look around quite a few doms were also union reps at one point

I'm not judging you, just your motivation for asking.
It isn't a stupid conclusion to get to.
When someone asks if Reps get paid, it is an easy assumption that they are considering the role, but only if they can earn from it.
Plus, your response to the first reply is judgemental. You're the one who can't understand why people would take on a role, and all it's stress and problems, without being paid extra.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

H&S rep in my office barely does any delivery and just skives around putting new labels on frames or anything to get out of doing proper work, shame when other reps on here work so hard.

A very few reps got an Honorarium which varied but IIRC one I heard about was £100 paid once a year. However as there is a question over taxation on this it may have been stopped and/or changed now.

Its certainly not available to, or given to every rep.
Our branch has just started honours payments, its a whole £50 a year or rather not one whole pound a week. Certainly it is not the reason you take on the job, in phone calls and sometimes petrol it will in fact cost US!

I agree with what somebody previously said, if it were paid it would attract the wrong type of rep.

We do not get anything except the satisfaction of hopefully keeping others out of trouble.
The only monies we receive is for expenses for travel to and from meetings.
Why do we do it? Well i was asked by my office colleagues to take it on when our last one stood down 4yrs ago.
I must be doing ok as i'm still here 4yrs later, if i didn't do it who would? If we didn't do it who would speak up in your office??

quote from Commons debate

There are around 200,000 people who are prepared to help their work colleagues by giving advice, formally representing them in grievance and disciplinary hearings and negotiating with managers. Many also have more specialist recognised roles improving workplace health and safety, training, equality and even environmental standards. This is often demanding and difficult work.

Most union reps in both public and private sectors rightly receive paid time off to carry out these duties. But many devote a large amount of their own time too. A recent government survey found reps in the public sector contribute up to 100,000 unpaid hours of their own time each week, and TUC data shows 1 in 6 union reps say less than a quarter of the time they spend on union duties is paid by their employer.

These are the unsung heroes of Britain’s volunteering tradition. The workplace wing of the Prime Minister’s Big Society. They support their work colleagues and they save millions for employers and the Exchequer because they reduce working days lost to injury and illness, reduce employment tribunal cases, improve take-up of training and improve productivity. The CBI know this and say “Union reps constitute a major resource … we believe that modern representatives have a lot to give to their fellow employees and to the organisations that employ them”.

i worked in print before joining the royal mail and was the union rep at my company which was for the unite union and we never got paid, i did it cos i wanted to help other colleagues, the only pay i got was for expenses over the year out of the local branch coffers which was £150 last year which nowhere near covered my expenses, have joined the cwu now so cant see it been any different from unite, other than may well be less expenses.

Anyone sitting with the DOM after their working hours is entitled to "Docket" as long as its not social reasons.

I am a rep because the union, through the efforts of some superb reps saved my job, when certain managers were using unsavoury tactics to have me dismissed, being one of thatchers children i have an abhorrence to injustice and a passionate belief in workers rights and advancement.i hope my contribution makes a difference and NO,my colleagues and i are not paid.
