It's official, It's a crap deal.
...The DMA loves it

The DMA has hailed the deal between Royal Mail and the CWU as “great news for the tens of thousands of companies” which should “inspire renewed confidence” among brand owners to use direct mail.
More than nine in 10 workers who voted in the CWU union’s ballot supported the “groundbreaking” agreement announced early in December.
The agreement, seen as a move towards German-style long-term industrial co-operation, secures a 9.06% increase in basic pay over three years. It also features five-year guarantees on job security, pensions and other conditions, and increases union involvement in the running of the business.
In return the CWU has signed up to measures designed to prevent local industrial action, which have afflicted Royal Mail for years, although has stopped short of signing a “no strike” agreement.
DMA executive director Chris Combemale said: “[The deal] reached between Royal Mail and CWU is great news for the tens of thousands of companies, their employees, charities and people that depend on the postal service every day.
“The rapid rise of ecommerce, and the dynamic integration of advertising and transactional mail with digital channels in customer communications has breathed new life into advertising mail and delivery of parcels. Investing in modernising the business, and a solid and stable workforce, is therefore essential for achieving long-term development and business growth for Royal Mail’s commercial customers
“Today’s announcement should inspire renewed confidence among brands to make advertising mail a key part of their one to one communications with millions of customers.”

Re: It's official, It's a crap deal.
Exactly what has the deal got to do with Direct Marketing companies or Advertising companies?
Do they know something we don't know? More D2D or bulk mail or DSA or whatever but what has the agreement/deal itself got to do with them?
Strange how many media sources are sort of saying that it is a no strike deal - they even go as far as saying that it makes it harder to have local strikes and virtually impossible to have a national strike within the terms of the agreement.
Clearly, RM must be well behind the briefings... And the ballot is not even done before unagreed employee initiatives are being introduced by some managers (some - if you believe that)
This is not saying that a Yes was not a good thing based on what was presented to the employees or the current climate but too many blanks to fill with an employer that cannot be entirely trusted with open ended agreements...

Funny how the Media, DMA, and no doubt other critics can see this as a no strike deal, but it hasn,t really entered the heads of our trusted CWU heirarchy. But then why would it. Perhaps securing their future has had a little bit to do with it.

As I have said before in another thread if this deal were to be agreed then it opens the door for more and more d2ds, possibly up to 10 per week.

More d2d = more revenue streams for RM = better protections for our jobs surely?

There is talk that some d2d suppliers are concerned that their products are being undermined with the volume of d2d going through letter boxes.CherryBakewell wrote:More d2d = more revenue streams for RM = better protections for our jobs surely?

But would they not be just as responsible for the problem?newtimes wrote:There is talk that some d2d suppliers are concerned that their products are being undermined with the volume of d2d going through letter boxes.CherryBakewell wrote:More d2d = more revenue streams for RM = better protections for our jobs surely?
They're pushing more and more of them at us.
Hardly a month goes by without at least 2 Virgin Media/Dominoes etc.
I'd expect the regularity of some companies D2D's coming through the letter box has damaged the potential for new customers, as most people will bin it without reading (which they probably do irrelevant of who it's from).
Same s**t, different day.

Good Deal/Bad Deal ... it no longer matters it has been unanimously accepted so move on.
