The Communication Workers Union welcomes research* published yesterday (Tuesday) showing strong support across the UK for Royal Mail's six-day-a-week postal delivery service.
The CWU, which represents postal workers in Royal Mail as well as in competing companies, fully backs the six-day-a-week delivery service and wants to see this as a standard service for all mail delivery companies.
Currently, Royal Mail is required to provide a six-day-a-week service under the Universal Service Obligation, which is set out under UK legislation.
CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "It is good to see that customers value the six-day-a-week service offered by Royal Mail but this should be the standard across the board. This research shows that customers are overwhelmingly dependent on a six-day service. Royal Mail is unique in offering this service.
"We have worked with Royal Mail to ensure that they set the bar high in terms of the services they provide customers as well as employee pay and terms and conditions. We will continue to push other delivery companies to offer a six-day-a-week service as standard."
*The report by Royal Mail was undertaken by Ipsos MORI between 11th - 18th December 2013 in London (North West post code areas), Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester and between January 16th - 21st 2014 in Bristol, Glasgow and Liverpool. It found that:
81 per cent of households surveyed agreed that, no matter who delivers the mail, they should deliver to their doors six days a week
66 per cent of households said they were dependent to some extent on a six day a week service
