USPS Ends Pay Freeze for Nonunion Employees

The Postal Service has ended a pay freeze for nonbargaining employees, giving them a 1 percent raise.

The raise, which will go to supervisory, managerial, postmaster and all workers outside any collective bargaining agreement, will go into effect Saturday. Those workers have endured a three-year-pay freeze.

The affected employees “have contributed to the Postal Service’s success during these difficult times,” Doug Tulino, USPS’ vice president for labor relations, wrote in a letter to the National Association of Postal Supervisors. “In recognition of their efforts, nonbargaining employees will receive a 1 percent salary increase.”

The Postal Service will also lift a suspension of its award program for nonunion workers, which has been in place since 2011. The program’s reinstatement will “provide managers the opportunity to recognize employees for exceptional performance in [fiscal 2014].”

Many of the nonbargaining employees are heads of post offices or postmasters, or have other supervisory positions, and will now once again benefit from pay-for-performance bonuses.

I like that, people always say its not worth joining the union, but are quick enough to take anything we've fought for. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

I don't think that would be a good idea, a two tiered work force. If RM payed non union employees less money then who do you think would be first in line for overtime etc. While the union fight for pay deals its the postman and women that do the job regardless being in the union or not.

Some of our non-union members are better union members than a lot of our union members. It's possibly because they know if they get caught doing something stupid they won't have the union there to bail them out.

I would rather have an office full of non-union members who started on time, stuck together and did the job properly than an office full of pretend union members who thought paying £3 a week made them bulletproof.
Not all non-members undermine the union but some members definitely do, I'm not prepared to let them off with that just because they cough up a couple of quid every week.

if every non union member was a paragon of virtue there would probably be no need for a union, although how we would negotiate pay ect would be interesting. in my experience non union usually = selfish tosser.

They aren't but neither are union members.
In my experience the only real difference overall in most cases is the payment of subs and to me that's probably the least important part of being a member.
I don't suppose HQ agrees.

union subs contribute to the education of reps. its fair to say union officials within royal mail have always been perceived as pseudo managers, especially at area level and above, but is it good to be this closely entwined or not? there are pluses and minuses. the old whitley committees started this sort of cooperation , is it good to work together or perceive managers are always the enemy? but its pretty obvious if we were all free spirits, not collective in any shape or form our terms and conditions would be piss poor. this is what non union members should realise and that's why I personally have little time for them.
