I didn't expect the results (out of 173 votes)

29% use their cars (36% if you count those who would if they had one)

I really didn't expect it to be that high and I'm sure a random 173 is not a good enough sample but still, 1/3 of delivery people on this site use their cars.

Cars on Delivery

Post by wdo1256 »

I use to use my car but after the CWU WTR letter last week a few of us have ditched the car.

I'm now on a cycle and thinking about the Tour de France next year

Well done to the CWU for finally getting the WTR going and to the Postman for running an excellent site

:cfo :lfo Just listened to :cfo on the bbc web site talking to John Humphries. It's full of lies. Amongst other things he says peeps are going home early up to 2 hrs It's a spanish practice and it has to stop. Flexibility has to come in, we have to do a full days work for a full days pay. Anyone out there who intends to carry on with using their car etc. Had better get their head out of the sand fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!------------KAWAK :no no :no no :cuppa :cuppa

Read most of the posts about using cars on delivery, and to be honest, I think its just plain daft. There's so many things that can go wrong. 2 of our lads have had accidents. 1 got hurt and was off for a while, and the other, he was ok, but they both wrote their cars off. There are people in our office who use them, including the ones just mentioned, cos they want to grab overtime 24/7. People are using them cos they argue about lack of bag drops, but either cant, or wont see they are damaging their jobs. They are making it into a no win situation because more work is likely to be piled on to them, and all they bother about is finishing earlier and worrying about the bags being late.

Another issue people forget to mention are the long term health implications of giving up your car.

Your bags are heavier.

You have further to walk each day.

You are more exposed to the weather.

I am all for work to rule except where using the car is concerned,I gave up the car and used an H.C.T for a while but was forced to move so now am on a walk that is very impracticle to use an H.C.T or the van.

There are no right or wrongs on cars as the government have also tried to get people to give up their cars and use public transport and failed time and again as it is not always practical to do so.

RM are trialing a new trike with a boot which looks like it has a lot of the benefits of the car so hopefully this will help solve the problem.

You won't have heavier bags if you follow the weight guidlines.
My last few pouches have 1 bundle in pouch and on in my hand.
Old days i would have 3 in pouch 1 in hand, now i split it into two hits.
Still only walk for 3-30hrs sometime less if we're late out.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Sorry mate there are rights and wrongs it is wrong to use your own private car to transport the Royal Mail. It is right to use the proper Royal Mail transprt provided for such use. As ive said many times before no other company would expect you to do it and not be insured and paid for it so why let Royal Mail abuse you.As for walks being impractical for vans and H.C.T. what about bikes and walking. Its what we postman do you know.

using car

Post by yougogal »

At the moment me and hubby both have cars. He works 15 miles away and obviously needs the use of a car, I travel to the D O and do my deliveries with mine. We have decided to sell one of the cars to save some dosh and I will go on the bus or he'll drop me off. The problem is that 3 out of the 5 deliveries that I cover as a floater don't have any designated pouch drops as they have been done with cars for so long. My worry is that if I tell my lineo that I plan to ditch the car he won't pull his finger out and sort some bag drops. You know what its like, "yeah yeah leave it with me" and nothing happens. What does everyone think, should I get it sorted now and then sell the car? Don't want to be left in the lurch. :nervous

if royal mail cannot provide pouch drops why should you worry, its up to your manager to sort it ,take your first bag with you and leave the rest behind in the office just think while hes trying to sort your pouch drops out ,he wont have time to bully anyone

Text of letter to Mark Dawson HSE Utilities Section Policy Group Nottingham.

UNSAFE AND ILLEGAL USE OF PRIVATE MOTOR VEHICLES ON POSTAL DELIVERIES:
I wish to bring to your urgent attention an incident which occurred last Monday morning 15 October, involving the unsafe and illegal use of a Private Car by an Agency worker who was employed at the Royal Mail Bedford Delivery Office.

The Agency Worker was stopped by Police just after leaving the Delivery Office in a private car, after he was apparently spotted driving rather carelessly whilst attempting to read a map. The Police subsequently found four Delivery Pouches of Mail inside this individual's car, before discovering the Agency worker was driving the Vehicle without Insurance, Tax or an MOT. It is unsure at this stage as to whether the individual has a driving licence but we should not be surprised if he does not as quite obviously no checks whatsoever were undertaken by local management. The Police immediately impounded the potential unsafe, illegal, 'death-trap', private Car and which was removed from the scene on a Police 'load-loader' recovery vehicle from where it was taken to the Police Pound to await destruction by being crushed.

Royal Mail managers are well aware of the "inherent dangers" of workers using private cars to carry out deliveries without adequate checks of Driving Licences, Motor Insurance, MOT and Road Tax, especially when taking on Agency Workers. Some Managers however are simply ignoring their legal duty of care and are "turning a blind-eye" to the situation putting the health and safety of employees and the public at risk.

Our Union is of the view that the HSE should carry out an investigation into this case with the view of bringing a prosecution against Royal Mail due to the seriousness of the incident and potential implications. We believe that Royal Mail have contravened Section 2(1) and 2(2)(a) of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974, in that they failed to operate a safe system of work in the Royal Mail Bedford delivery office in that there was no proper system operating for authorising or permitting the use of private motor vehicles by employees and Agency staff in the course of the discharge of their duties thus ensuring that any vehicle that was so used was roadworthy, that the driver was a competent person who was qualified to drive and that the said vehicle was insured, MOT'd and Taxed for the purpose of delivering the mail. Further to this Royal Mail have contravened Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974, for failing to ensure the safety of people not employed by them but affected by its work, whereby they are guilty of offences as provided by Section 33(1)(a) of the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974 and liable to a penalty as provided by Section 33 (1)(a) of the said Act as amended.

You will be aware (because I have previously brought it to your attention) that Royal Mail pleaded guilty to three Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 offences at South Gloucester Magistrates' Court on 25th March 1997 arising from the death of Stroud Royal Mail Delivery Office postal worker in an accident using his own private vehicle on delivery which showed up at Gloucester just as it has last week at Bedford specific shortcomings in procedure. It is symptomatic of the general failure to devise and maintain safety checking systems. Although no-one may have given the person concerned express permission to use a private car, its use was condoned by management as it was apparently plain as a pikestaff and obvious to everyone else at the Delivery Office so how could management not be aware of it?

Would you therefore initiate an investigation into this case with the view of appropriate enforcement action and prosecution. I have separately provided for your information the memorandum of conviction of Royal Mail entered in the Register of the Magistrates' Court, South Glos. Magistrates' Court, No 2 Court sitting on 25th March 1997 at 2pm.

Yours Sincerely
Dave Joyce
National Health, Safety & Environment Officer
