HATHERLEIGH'S post is mainly delivered by post ladies Janet, Juliet and Wendy, though Simon and Jesse lend a masculine hand on days off.
When I called in at the sorting office on Saturday morning the street lights were still on. The post for Hatherleigh had been collected at 6.15am from Okehampton, which deals with all the EX20 mail.
At a staggeringly fast speed the letters, bills, packets and cards, were being sorted into rows of slots, ready to be delivered all over the town.
The weather is the worst aspect of this job, the best being the fact that people are generally very pleased to receive their post and welcome the arrival of the postman.
There is an opportunity to meet a lot of people during the day's work. You obviously don't need to mind getting up early, but then you are working on your own and largely at your own speed. Hatherleigh is providing young Jesse with his first job and he is enjoying the fresh air and exercise.
He said: "It's good to be outside. Every day is different.''
A number of rural deliveries are involved, including Rutleigh, Langabeare, Strawbridge and Upcott.
Wendy, Juliet and Janet do the same rounds in Hatherleigh every day. Hopefully all the post is delivered by around 2.15pm so the trio are very fit and certainly very friendly.
It's good to receive a letter (let's not mention the bills) and personally I think a letter or card beats an e-mail by a very long way. But it's even nicer to receive a cheerful "good morning" and a smile as one passes the door of the sorting office early in the morning or as the post lady delivers the mail. Hatherleigh certainly has a really great postal service and everyone is enormously indebted to the whole team in the Square.

"the trio are very fit and certainly very friendly" - that's how it should be
but that golf trolley looks a bit overloaded.
