I suppose they'd be split up and copied and left on the fitting for each job if they had sense, attached to a bloody great fluorescent green plastic tag to prevent loss. I wonder if there will be extra payment for the new responsibilities, or is another 'absorption' freebie?

Except the keys are bigger and heavier than a PDA.
And if you lose one .........
Thanks for that...

I tried collection once and the keys were a mine field - not all of them had proper labels. And swapping postboxes' ancient keys left right and centre is asking for trouble
there was just 2 boxes on the delivery i was on, so i only had 2 keys. they wont see it as a problem. especially now we are in vans,,,,easier again. :Very Happy

There are ten boxes on my rural duty. :sad: It was twelve but two got stolen and weren't replaced. :shock: So another several years and there might not be any. :crazy:

It's only on Saturdays isn't it?

We have to do it, I think they said we had to seg the mail when we got back too but the union rep has said that we don't. No drama really, it adds a couple of minutes I suppose. That said, is it the thin end of the wedge?

What else can we do whilst delivering? Read meters?

:shhhhh It was something they were looking at 7 or 8 years ago. http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... ing#p20033" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They envisaged having the technology to read the meter from outside, technically feasible but bloody expensive. Some providers would bite the bullet and others wouldn't.

It's not so expensive now and if the google streetview car can drive past taking all your wifi details I would imagine the same could be done with a simple wifi set up in a meter box which just sends the info through your router direct to the supplier in much the same way that a Sky Box does a call back to tell them what mucky movies you've been booking at 3am....so no real need for any kind of meter reader really.

Well that's six years away so I'll be 74 and probably won't remember what a smart meter is and when the wife finds out about the movies I'll blame it on the smart meter :chuckle

Late 70s and during 80s it was common practice to clear letter boxes in your delivery area after the delivery, letters were processed and Ist class were to be delivered on the second delivery same day. Nothing wrong with clearing letter boxes of your delivery area after the delivery ... is it ? or it is too much to ask? does not take long to emply the box and bring the mail back .... and if you think about it .. there is harldley any letters in the boxes now a days.

yes it is to much to ask, considering some people are struggling to complete the work they already have, and RM are unlikely to reduce the workload to allow time for the extra task. Remember delivering to a neighbour take no more time, hands up who believes that load of b@llocks.

If you start emptying boxes during deliveries how long before the pressure comes to end the timed collection if all there is left in the box is a couple of letters?
Is it too much to ask to think about someone else's job?
You don't have to be a genius to see where this is leading. :cuppa

Our walkers don't collect but all vans both bulk and P&L empty boxes during their delivery which led to quite a number of SA collections disappearing. Of course the later deliveries meant there was a shortage of staff who were willing or because of the lateness of their delivery unable to do the collections. I don't think collections will be stopped but it's certainly on the cards they will be centralised at a Mail Centre IMO.
