In a nutshell, the employer can only make you 'work'* all you contracted hours if the work is still in the first place. To achieve this by 'Artificial lapsing' is not effective and perhaps more costly...
Even dingo conceded that most postmen work more or less about the same, if the work is there. So to me. he is saying the work might not be there in some cases
*work' is actual work not staying in the office till the end.
Unless, some of you here are ready to tell the precise composition of your office, the number of staff, FT/PT ratio, the model traffic and example of actual traffic then we are just being theoretical... and simply pointing fingers

Even if traffic figures are below model week, does not always mean there is a capacity to lapse outdoors. Check the mix of traffic, packets may be up which would also lower the capacity to lapse.

But what if they only have time to do extra in their duty because they cut corners and that. If they did job right the deliveries are too big and would cut off or have to book overtime. Surely dom can see this but seems to be all about savings.

yes dom can see this, but by allowing it, it helps him get towards his target to reduce costs in the office and thus helps him earns his nice bonusShe Raa wrote:But what if they only have time to do extra in their duty because they cut corners and that. Also helps him to justify reducing staff levels - if lapsing constantly then duties are too small and can be added to.zx135 wrote:yes dom can see this, but by allowing it, it helps him get towards his target to reduce costs in the office and thus helps him earns his nice bonusShe Raa wrote:But what if they only have time to do extra in their duty because they cut corners and that. This is why all offices need a GOOD Rep and why HQ need to buck up their ideas.

Ok understand but if people get job done on time by cutting corners and that and do the extra within time also. This surely makes it impossible for a rep to challenge. Wouldn't it

Re: Traffic figures are higher. model week
heres an example, if the forecast of traffic was above model week for the whole week, the rep would insist on overtime being done instead of lapsing, also postie A is on long term sick, so at the resourcing meeting the rep says for next week we have one absence, we need to arrange OT to cover these days, DOM then goes and arranges cover, so posties B C D E F all agree to work their days off, but when Monday comes round, the actual traffic figure is lower than forecast and model week, Postie B is already in work on over time he is not supposed to be sent home, there is no point lapsing postie A's duty as postie B is in and you need to find some work for him to do, out come = Duty not lapsed and Postie B paid overtimechrisj wrote:So what has model week traffic figures got to do with anything or resource meeting if the actual traffic is low and there is time within contractual hours... you folks that seems to know it all tend to contradict yourselves... Working every hour is all well and good in a MC but it is not that linear in delivery.

Re: Traffic figures are higher. model week
I sort of understand that 'particular scenario' but I can assure you that in today's climate, the manager might be under severe pressure from his DIM or above to still lapse but then carry the spare (OT person) or send the spare to another office.
I am serious, it does happen in my office and there are also some others here that have talked about artificial lapsing... (I have posted the same sort of comment on another topic).
At least, there is enough time for lapsing so manager might still be within their rights to make so many people go and deliver to one area when there is a spare. However, some are saying that they are asked to absorb (ok, it could be for absence reasons) even when there is no time - thereby leaving some items behind ???
