IT WAS interesting to read Michelle Hurst's 'Hear Say' column in which she related the inappropriate service she had encountered from Royal Mail.
I live in a village on the Lincolnshire Wolds with approximately 1,200 residents.
Our Royal Mail sorting office is based at Market Rasen which is about nine miles from our home.
For several months now our sole mail delivery to the village gets to our door at any time between 3pm and 6.30pm (in fairness to Royal Mail I include the time of 3pm but wish to point out that it is a very, very rare occurrence!).
These times do not apply solely to the increase in post items during the very busy Christmas period. Last week for example our mail was delivered at 6.30pm.
How the postal delivery worker was able to read the destination on the envelopes surprises me as street lighting in the village is very sparse. I do note that the delivery worker has now taken to wearing a headlamp as they go along the streets. This light doesn't always help as mail is often put through incorrect addresses which I assume is mainly due to the fact that at a time such as 6pm it is impossible to read the addresses on the items being delivered.
Last week we received a letter at 6.30pm, which had a first class stamp affixed and which requested a return answer.
It was impossible to answer immediately and would have been impossible even if we lived in the centre of a large conurbation.
It isn't surprising that people are using e-mail to contact each other and Royal Mail is losing business but not everyone has access to the internet.
Perhaps we should set up business as a Pony Express delivery for the Wolds!

The Telegraph says:
It would seem that gone are the days when residents, especially in outerlying areas, can expect a postal service that is consistent in its daily timings, or indeed that your letters are delivered with your milk! or e-mail to viewpoint@grimsbytelegraph.co.uk
Or you could post them to 80 Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, DN31 3EH – here's hoping we receive them!

We've always delivered in the dark.
It's just that it used to be at the start of the day, instead of at the end.

Personally it sounds like an agency or newbie getting shafted onto doing some delivery after they've done their own, probably costing more to do it that way but since when has RM ever thought about the money??

What gets me is, why are Royal Mail still trying to drag the business through the pig poo when they now have share holders to keep happy ??
Why are the majority share holders not screaming from the roofs to get things fixed and working how it should be ?
Unless this is another case of the old hard core managers who have been told to make things difficult rather than re-educating them to do the opposite and if they can't be re-educated, get rid of them !!
Or, they have another agenda similar to what is happening in Canada ?
And if that is the case, how do the share holders win from that ?
