Royal Mail 'confident' after revenues rise

Royal Mail has said it is "confident" about hitting its targets after posting a 2% rise in like-for-like revenues in the nine months to 29 December.

Parcel deliveries accounted for 51% of revenues, and chief executive Moya Greene said the firm handled 115 million parcels in December.

Ms Green added that the firm's financial performance to date was in line with expectations.

The postal service was privatised in October 2013.

Shares in Royal Mail closed at 588p on Thursday, up 78% since the company was floated at 330p-a-share in October.

Ms Greene said the number of parcels in December was "significantly more than any other carrier in the UK parcel market".

She said the company's European parcels business was doing well after exploiting "growth opportunities in the eurozone".

Letter revenue fell by 3% on a like-for-like basis, the company said, as the impact of London 2012 collectable stamp sales waned.

The CWU welcomes the announcement from Royal Mail of a two per cent increase in revenue in the nine months before 29 December.

Royal Mail plc's Interim Management Statement, released today, stated the Group handled 115 million parcels in December with parcels accounting for 51 per cent of revenue.

Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary said: "We welcome the news that Royal Mail continues to be the dominant force in the market. Postal workers are to be congratulated for delivering that success and for all their hard work over the christmas period.

"The union, postal workers and Royal Mail are continuing their efforts to maintain the company's role as the leading carrier in the UK."

"Royal Mail plc's Interim Management Statement, released today, stated the Group handled 115 million parcels in December" - that's getting on towards a thousand for each of us, fifty a day. .
