There's been a few people in our office who have been informed today by a manager that their contracts are no longer being renewed after being in the job a year yet they've just taken on about 5 new starters. Just goes to show you can't get complacent and think you're going to get taken on permanently. It makes me wonder if there was some other reason they're letting these people go as there's others who started at the same time yet their contracts have been extended until the summer.

Could it possibly cynically be that the ones being released are now coming up to the time when there pay will go up to the maximum and it is cheaper to employee new people for another year. A kind of rolling year syndrome. How does that fit in with the new agreement?

I don't think that can be the reason otherwise they would have also got rid of the others who started at the same time as the ones being let go but who knows. The reason they were given was last in first out. I started at the same time as the ones going yet my contract has just been renewed until the summer.

Maybe it was down to attendance records or just general poor performance in the job.

I was having a discussion with my manager about contracts that morning, because there was a new vacancy up for our DO and it was permament. I was a bit annoyed because I only started my fixed-term contract a few months earlier.

He said that somebody probably made a mistake when putting the job online ("ticked the wrong box") and that all jobs are fixed-term initially. He wasn't sure but said I might be made permanent after my first year. Got home that same the afternoon to find a permanent contract waiting for me. :hmmmm
