Online retailer is to offer Sunday service in seven areas, for shoppers frustrated about missing deliveries during the week when they are at work
Amazon is to strike another blow against the high street by launching a Sunday delivery service across the UK.
The online retailer is to offer the deliveries in seven areas, for shoppers frustrated about missing deliveries during the week when they are at work.
Amazon tested Sunday deliveries in London during December. It will now make the service permanent in the capital, while also rolling it out to Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds.
Online sales are forecast to grow by 17pc in 2014 and clear the £100bn mark, as online retailers improve their delivery and collection options.
According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, online sales already account for more than £1 in every £5 spent by consumers in the retail sector after a 16pc rise in sales in 2013.
Jamie Stephenson, UK director for Amazon Logistics, said: “At Amazon, we’re continually innovating on behalf of our customers. We know customers really appreciated the immediacy of Sunday deliveries during the Christmas period and we were able to deliver thousands more parcels in this way in those four weeks.”
Sunday deliveries will be available to members of the Amazon Prime scheme at no additional charge.

Amazon offers Sunday delivery to Amazon Prime members
Monday, January 20th, 2014
Amazon has today announced that it will now offer Sunday deliveries on an ongoing basis in a number of cities across the UK.
Amazon Prime members, who receive unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of items, can now receive their packages on a Sunday at no additional charge, making every day an Amazon Prime delivery day. The announcement comes after the service was trialled in London for four weeks in the run up to Christmas.
The offering will be provided via the Amazon Logistics service which operates a number of delivery stations that act as hubs for deliveries in their local area. Amazon Logistics works with regional delivery partners to deliver items directly to customers.
The service will be available in London, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds. Customers that select the One-Day Delivery option in these areas can also benefit from Sunday deliveries.
“Delivery on a Sunday means every day is now an Amazon delivery day and that Prime members can enjoy even more convenience when shopping on Amazon,” said Jamie Stephenson, UK Director for Amazon Logistics. “At Amazon, we’re continually innovating on behalf of our customers. We know customers really appreciated the immediacy of Sunday deliveries during the Christmas period and we were able to deliver thousands more parcels in this way in those four weeks. We’re delighted to now offer this service to customers in London, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds.”

Re: Amazon to launch Sunday deliveries
With a big company like Amazon starting Sunday deliveries it'll only be a matter of time before RM and every other courier company has to offer Sunday delivery if they want the work over the whole week

Re: Amazon to launch Sunday deliveries
Its a logical progression, the vast majority of our customers work through the week and in daytime, we should also be able to open our caller office up to 9pm in the evening so they can call in after work to pick up parcels they haven't been able to get, perhaps they can be texted by the sender or via PDA if they have had a card left in with an unique reference number so they don't call in twice for the same thing.
