Had a delivery today (Sunday) from Hermes. I asked the bloke if he always worked on Sundays and he told that it was too wet for him yesterday. I called him a wuss and pointed out that I had spent 4 hours in the rain yesterday. Don't think he was very impressed .

The only way rm would deliver nationwide on sundays would be if big companies like amazon eBay etc had mass amounts of parcels that can only be delivered on sundays and was giving the business to other companies. Then it would make sense to run the network on sundays. But it would require a lot of parcels just to cover cost let alone leave a sliver of profit.

Parcels are already making massive profits.

Letters that are Colourful, Glossy and nice as they are, May still be a important part for the business (Short Term), But will become more and less profitable.
Which will be a bind for the company. RMG Letters including Leaflets May be sold to a up and coming rival company. Leading the way for what is left of Royal mail
letters (now it is a parcel company) and Parcel Force to become one, Merged into bigger Delivery Office Units, Further apart with less smaller units between.
Vans can go a lot further than Bikes and Hold bigger Items, Coupled with designated pick ups (Maybe With home collections) and drop of points will become more convenient.
Customers will be able to order Affordable Multiple parcel Home Collections At a online discounted rate (Ebay Sellers ??). Collected as we Deliver on our rounds.
With the Flexibility of a possible full seven day delivery network service, Which may even start at a minor loss, Then soon becoming more and more profitable as parcels increase further.

6am till 10am on Saturdays and early finishes are a thing of the past, Private investors will want more than just a Monday to Saturday 6 - 2pm Delivery span.

Chanting - :nervous I must sort faster, We love Parcels, I'm lucky to have a job, If you don't like the job there's the Door, You chose the Job ! :nervous - We are where we are :dance

If there is stronger demand for parcels then we need to cut down normal delivery day for D2D and junk mail and increase parcel delivery days. But how will Royal Mail make sure people get their fair shares of saturday and sunday off. I don't like this as this will mean fewer sundays for walking the dogs and restrict travelling on Salsa night out on Saturday. If there is sunday delivery it will be very big demand for the public who work monday to friday jobs.

This won't happen. More scaremongering.

Even if they wanted it to happen we'd have to agree to it. If there's one thing we can all agree on it's that we don't want to work sundays so it would be a non starter from the off.

I would not think this is scaremongering. An ideal opportunity for Royal Mail to employ a secondary workforce, which Sunday working would probably not effect the current agreement on the table. There will be many takers out there, including the influx of new EU Migrants, who will gladly do the job for £6.23p per hour. Nothing is off the drawing board where RM are concerned.

The future of the Royal mail is savings savings savings. I really cant see them investing in sunday deliveries as there would have to be a big market for sunday specific parcels. Because they can just run the growth in parcels through the current six day network.

We won't get to make the decision on whether they bring in sunday deliveries, that's a business decision.
We might get to have some input into how they resource it but at the end of the day if Royal Mail decides it wants to deliver parcels on a sunday that's exactly what they'll do.
I was told in person by Jon Millidge, the company secretary that they would actively consider this if they believed there was a market for it so it isn't scaremongering.

We would have to agree to work Sundays. If they wanted to start delivering parcels on a sunday and people volunteered to do it then that would be fine.

But the talk here is that royal mail would be delivering letters and we'd all be working Sundays. That's scaremongering to me. Its never going to happen. We all took the jobs on the condition we don't work sundays. We'd have to agree to work sundays if they wanted a full delivery on that day. Nobody would agree.

I think even if they tried to enforce it that there would suddenly be a lot of holy postmen who wouldn't work sundays for religious reasons. It would be a s**t storm and thry know it.

We also had people working sundays on packets at our office so it wouldn't be something new.

I can see it happening within the next five years, it'd only need a few big customers like Amazon to want Sunday delivery.

Indeed. Not "if" but "when".
On-line shopping etc is only going to grow, and Sunday isn't any sort of special day for most, now.
Shareholders will demand the most out of "their" under-utilised assets, and that will surely mean a seven day operation, especially as the competition seem to have started doing it already.

Really, half the competition don't even do Saturday let alone Sunday, amazon alone would not be able to make Sunday delivery profitable, most other online retailers would not be able to make it pay either, one or two people may wish to pay £10 plus for delivery on a Sunday, but not enough to make it commercially viable. Before you ask where I get £10+ from Saturday delivery from most online retailers is £6.95 upwards, so Sunday would be about £10, not to mention a lot of families go out on a Sunday and the rest would not want to be woken up early on a Sunday with postie knocking with there latest DVD. That's not to say network might not get Sunday working, collecting from etailers on a Sunday for Monday delivery, it is a bit of a pain, ordering something Friday evening for Tuesday delivery.

You are assuming that Royal Mail would be stupid enough to walk into this on a national scale without testing the market first, They are far more likely to trial it on a small scale in areas where they think there is a market for it and build it up from there.
